Clyman was a guide, trapper and 'mountain man' from the early 1820s until 1848, when he settled in California's Napa Valley and lived out his days as a prosperous farmer. He was one of the first white men to traverse South Pass (in 1826), and was a frequent companion of the likes of John Charles Fremont, Jedediah Smith and Thomas Fitzpatrick.
