The author seeks to kindle a warmth rather than hostility towards the animal kingdom. with some 260 short entries of anecdotes and observations on the habits and characteristics of animals, birds, fish, and their relationships with each other, also plants and phenomena in nature, and naturalists and country workers. Also described are features in the parks surrounding London - Hampton Court, Richmond, Bushy, Windsor Great Park. This edition is listed in Charles Darwin's reading notebooks.
