Description:
Barnsley: Pen & Sword Transport, 2017. The Brighton Atlantic locomotives were some of the most handsome machines ever constructed at Brighton Works. They were signed by the D. Earl Marsh, Locomotive Superintendent of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway, and produced as two classes, the H1, introduced in 1905-1906, and the H2, introduced in 19111912.The Brighton Atlantic type has had a following among enthusiasts and model engineers for over a century, with many fine examples of models of these machines being constructed in all scales, both as live steam and electric powered.Great interest is still there today, with many models of these fine locomotives on show at model engineering exhibitions and on smaller scale Brighton or Southern layouts. The Bluebell Railway in East Sussex is currently constructing a full-size replica of the last H2 Atlantic (Beachy Head) in a workshop at Sheffield Park, using some parts from the original locomotive and a rescued Great Northern Atlantic boiler. Description:
Peterborough: The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, 2002. There has never been a collection of locomotive names like those on locomotives of the London & North Western Railway. Travellers on the L&NWR must have wondered at their extraordinary variety. Author the Rev. John Goodman provides details of the named locomotives owned by the L&NWR and its constituent companies, including the Grand Junction and the Liverpool & Manchester railways, the Bolton & Leigh and North Union railways, and of the Lancaster & Carlisle and several companies which were absorbed into it. It covers all the names dating from the times of King William IV to the withdrawal of Sirocco, the last L&NWR name to survive in June 1949, and analyses the naming policy through the succession of Chief Mechanical Engineers. The Company policy of re-using engine names over and over again is fully documented and a glossary of every name is included. The last section was written as the result of the…

Description:
Barnsley: Pen & Sword Transport, 2020. Dugald Drummond had a long career in locomotive and railway engineering, staring in Scotland, Drummond worked and also held high office on the Highland, London Brighton & South Coast Railway, North British and Caledonian Railways, before arriving on the London & South Western Railway in the mid 1890s. He was quite unlike William Adams his predecessor, who was a mild mannered gentleman, well liked by the staff of the L & S W R, Drummond was a martinet and rough by comparison, who was at times hard to reason with. As a result of his stubborn nature, he died early after an accident that scalded his feet, having refused to have proper treatment. His locomotives were a mixed proposition of good bad and indifferent, his 4-4-0 tender and 0-4-4 tank classes being very good, however his 4-6-0 tender locomotives were another proposition, proving to be a disappointment except the T14 class which lasted in service until 1951. Many of his 4-4-0 tender and…

Description:
Philadelphia: Casemate Publishers, 2020. The Lafayette Escadrille was an all-volunteer squadron of Americans who flew for France during World War I. One hundred years later, it is still arguably the best-known fighter squadron ever to take to the skies. In this work the entire history of these gallant volunteers - who named themselves after the Marquis Lafayette, who came to America's aid during its Revolution - is laid out in both text and pictorial form. In time for the centennial celebration, this work not only tells the fascinating story of the Lafayette Escadrille, it shows it. Already a student of the squadron, the author spent a full year sifting through university and museum archives in the United States and France for photographs and documents relating to the famed unit. To complement these images, he traveled extensively, taking snapshots of existing markers and memorials honoring the men of the Lafayette Escadrille. In France, he specifically sought out locations where the squadron operated…

Sherborne: Evro Publishing, 2021. When launched at the Geneva motor show in 1971, the Lamborghini Countach was like a vision of the future, with its incredibly radical styling by Bertone s Marcello Gandini. Through various evolutionary stages, the Countach remained in production from 1973 to 1990 and during that time 1,997 examples were manufactured, making it exceedingly rare as well as highly desirable. Subsequently the magnificent Countach has risen to almost mythical status among collectors and enthusiasts. Now, as the model approaches its 50th anniversary, two passionate and deeply knowledgeable Countach co-owners have written an authoritative new book the first English-language study of the car for 30 years to celebrate this fabled Italian supercar in all its glory.. 1st Edition. Description:
Dorchester: Veloce Publishing, 2018. The wedge-shaped V12 Lamborghini flagships were always spectacular in shape, sound and performance. The Murciélago was an evolution of the Countach and the Diablo, and was as iconic in its time as its illustrious predecessors were in theirs. This book examines the Murcielago in detail, while casting a look back through Lamborghinis troubled history, to understand how the Murciélago came into being. Ferrucio Lamborghini, Patrick Minram, Megatech, Chrysler, and finally VW-Audi, all played their part in the birth of this modern classic. The book touches on the people and organisations before examining each of the model variants, and discusses the joys and tribulations of ownership.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Description:
Corhampton: Noodle Books, 2008. First opened in 1898, and having an operational life of just over sixty years, the 12 mile branch line between Newbury and Lambourn was an early casualty of a nationalised network keen to rid itself of the less profitable aspects of its operation. In essence, the fate of the Lambourn branch mirrored that of many other lines. First born out of a need to serve a local community, it was later deserted as the community began to look elsewhere, thus abandoning the railway it had once cherished. In 2007, nearly half a century after these events took place, a chance conversation and a subsequent meeting revealed a wealth of new material on this historic line. This gem of a book features an abundance of unpublished photographs, undiscovered facts, and a unique personal insight into the daily operation of the line. Certain to entice and intrigue railway historians and enthusiasts around the country, it will also appeal to the local community who remember the days when the…

Description:
Dorchester: Veloce Publishing, 2018. An historic and nostalgic look at the role of the Land Rover in the emergency services over the last 70 years. Land Rover products have been used by the emergency services almost from the moment the first model left the factory in 1948. The agility and size of these vehicles made them an immediate hit with fire services, where they initially became popular as factory fire tenders. Police forces were also attracted by the cross-country ability and versatility of Land Rovers, especially outside Britain, and, when long-wheelbase models provided extra space, they also became favourites for ambulance conversions. Some emergency-service conversions required very little adaptation, and were carried out in the workshops of the end-users. Others - such as six-wheel Range Rover fire tenders - required major alterations from the factory-standard vehicle. Meanwhile, specialist companies developed dedicated ambulance and fire tender bodywork, creating a fascinating variety of…

Description:
Shebbear: Herridge & Sons, 2021. There has rarely been a British success story like the Land-Rover. Developed in a short time and on a small budget, it was launched in 1948 and having passed though many revisions is still a world leader today. The series of vehicles detailed in this book take us from the beginning in 1948 to 1985, and the many surviving examples, supported by a comprehensive parts and restoration industry, are seeing a solid increase in value. Here James Taylor, the premier historian of the marque, provides a detailed study of the Land-Rover's evolution through the period and the variants and special-purpose versions that were produced. Uniquely, it is the manufacturer's own sales brochures and advertising that supply the illustrations, which number some 400 and serve not only to correctly depict the vehicles but also to re-create the atmosphere of the times when they were made.. 1st Edition. Description:
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996. This book describes the ways in which politicians, church leaders, generals, leaders of national movements and others try to influence our use of language. Professor Cooper argues that language planning is never attempted for its own sake. Rather it is carried out for the attainment of nonlinguistic ends such as national integration, political control, economic development, the pacification of minority groups, and mass mobilization. Many examples are discussed, including the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language, feminist campaigns to eliminate sexist bias in language, adult literacy campaigns, the plain language movement, efforts to distinguish American from British spelling, the American bilingual education movement, the creation of writing systems for unwritten languages, and campaigns to rid languages of foreign terms. Language Planning and Social Change is the first book to define the field of language planning and relate it to other aspects of social…

Description:
Rails Publishing, 2019. When the first BR 'pilot scheme' main line diesel locomotives appeared in the late 1950s they were generally painted in traditional Brunswick green. Some classes sported a more imaginative, pleasing two-tone green livery while the Western Region opted for maroon for its 'Warships' and 'Westerns' following a poll among the general public. In 1965 the British Railways Board decided on a new corporate image and adopted Rail blue as the standard colour for its locomotive fleet together with a new double arrow symbol. In 1978 it was agreed that a further change was desirable and selected classes were repainted with a large logo and full wrap round yellow nose ends or cab fronts, the first machine to be treated being Class 56 No.56036. This simple alteration transformed the look of the locomotives and, in spite of all the new colour schemes that have appeared in recent years, for the author at least the large logo livery is one of the best. He illustrates it…

Barnsley: Pen & Sword Military, 2021. Operation Market Garden -the Allied airborne invasion of German-occupied Holland in September 1944 -is one of the most famous and controversial Allied failures of the Second World War. Many books have been written on the subject seeking to explain the defeat. Historians have generally focused on the mistakes made by senior commanders as they organized the operation. The choice of landing zones has been criticized, as has the structure of the airlift plan. But little attention has been paid to the influence that combat doctrine and training had upon the relative performance of the forces involved. And it is this aspect that Aaron Bates emphasizes in this perceptive, closely argued and absorbing re-evaluation of the battle. As he describes each phase of the fighting he shows how German training, which gave their units a high degree of independence of action, better equipped them to cope with the confusion created by the surprise Allied attack. In contrast, the…

Description:
Barnsley: Pen & Sword Transport, 2021. Mention the name Carlisle to any steam enthusiast of a certain age and they will probably conjure up an image of bygone days when Stanier and Gresley pacifics rubbed shoulders alongside each other within Citadel station whilst waiting to relieve incoming titled trains such as the Royal Scot and the Waverley. Such scenes, in addition to steam locomotives threading their way across a network of goods lines, and the citys three surviving motive power depots, were all subjects captured on film by a number of young enthusiasts who lived in Carlisle during the final years of steam. It is the work of those cameramen, aided by others who visited the area, that will offer the reader an insight as to the variety that still prevailed at Carlisle during that time. Looking slightly further afield, images are also included which feature locomotives working hard on those steeply graded lines that radiated from the city towards summits with names to capture the…
