Avon, CT: The Heritage Club. Near Fine. 1970. Hardcover. Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was a Nobel Prize winner who wrote 24 novels and over 70 short stories. Main Street was first published in 1920. This Heritage Club edition is illustrated by the famous American painter Grant Wood (his illustrations first accompanied a Limited Edition Club edition in 1937). This copy is nicely bound in the original publisher's blue cloth covers with a tan spine and gilt spine lettering over a black background. It is accompanied by the original blue slipcase which has just a hint of wear to one corner. This is the first edition, but a later issue (probably a second "state') as the number "4" on page 54 is imperfect as is the letter "y" in the word "may" on the bottom of page 387. The book was originally expected to sell 10 - 20,000 copies, but in the first year sold 180,000 copies--the publisher kept printing copies since the demand was so high. The original printing plates became worn, thus causing the changes in the text noted above. The Pulitzer jury awarded their prize to Lewis for this book, but it was overturned by the Board and the award instead went to Edth Wharton for "The Age of Innocence."
