Engraved map, printed on twelve sheets, above four sheet letterpress description annotated with several woodcut animals, with fine CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOUR HEIGHTENED GOLD, trimmed to neat lines, laid on linen, extensive areas of restoration. A full conservation report is available on request. A spectacular wall map of astonishing beauty made at the beginning of the Dutch Golden Age. Cartography The present map draws on the cartography of Luis Teixeira (fl.1564-1613) - whose name appears in the large pasted title - a Portuguese cartographer from a famous mapmaking dynasty. He worked in Lisbon and the Portuguese colonies, but was also a friend of and collaborator with Dutch cartographers, contributing a map of Japan to Abraham Ortelius' atlas. Ortelius and Cornelis Claesz published five of his maps between them, and all were specifically advertised as based on his work, indicating that he was highly respected in… Read More

London,: Published by J. Watson, 7 Vere Street, Cavendish Square,, July, 1834.. Image: 292 by 414mm (11.5 by 16.25 inches). Sheet: 356 by 450mm (14 by 17.75 inches).. Engraving with aquatint and contemporary colour, closed tear to title and just into image. A nightime scene showing the Devonport Royal Mail coming in through Temple Bar in the Strand, heading to the Lombard Street Post Office. Temple Bar marks the boundary between the City of London and Westminster; the gate is topped by statues of King James I and his wife, Anne of Denmark, with the lion and unicorn supporters from the royal coat of arms. The guard at the back of the carriage is blowing a trumpet to warn passengers and the gatekeepers of their arrival, and has awakened a figure in nightcap and gown who peers from the window to the right. The passage of the coach is observed by a traveller with a carpet bag and a night watchman with a torch hanging from his belt, who would patrol the streets and call out the times. H is for Hatter Engraved trade card. Trade card for Margaret Hooke & Son, who ran a shop in Temple Bar selling hosiery, hats and many other accessories, both wholesale and retail. Their card is illustrated with an engraved image of St George slaying the dragon, in reference to their address """"at the George next Door to ye Rose Tavern"""". The style of both the engraving and the writing, the types of apparel on offer, as well as the form of the address that uses a sign rather than a number indicates that the card is from the mid-eighteenth century. There are no existing documents recording the presence of a Hooke hosier in Temple Bar during this period, but it is likely that the business was originally established by Margaret's husband and taken over by her and his son after his death. Based at the Golden Head in Panton Street, Richard Siddall was a chemist and druggist, sometimes partnered with David Swann, during an interesting period of medical history. The mid-eighteenth century saw significant progress, as doctors were increasingly trained in the scientific method and hospitals made more professional, but there was still a great deal unknown about the anatomy and its processes, bacteria, infection and the nature of diseases. Those who fell ill still relied on remedies with little basis in scientific fact, such as """"the elixir for the asthma, as also for the gout and rheumatism"""" advertised by Siddall and Swann. The image on the trade card also indicates that the chemists may have continued some of the alchemical processes historically used in medicine. The two men shown,… Read More

Thomas Heath's (c1714-1757) first business operated from about 1721 from his address """"At the Hercules"""" or """"Hercules & Globe"""". In about 1742, he entered into business with Tycho Wing. Wing (1696-1750) was the son of astronomer, astrologer, and land surveyor, Vincent Wing (1619–1668). After his father's death Wing continued to publish his father's almanac, which he undoubtedly sold though """"Heath and Wing"""". W is for Widow Outfitter Engraved trade card. The trade card of Matthias Otto Senior, much the same in style and language to the present card, is believed to have been in circulation from around 1735. The fact that both list the same address at Bullin Court on the Strand indicates that the son took over the family business after the death of his eponymous father. Matthias Otto Junior's trade card appears to be from the mid-eighteenth century, and offers a glimpse into the behaviour expected of widowed women at that time. The first article mentioned on Otto's card are """"Widows Weeds"""" which, in 'A Dictionary of the English Language' (1755), Dr Johnson describes as """"a garment of clothing, habit, or dress. Trade card for John Crozer, a weaver and mercer listed in 'Bailey's Northern Directory' for 1781 as active at Widegate Alley, while 'The New Complete Guide to All Persons who Have Any Trade' of 1783 correctly located his premises at Widegate Street. These seem to be the only records made of Crozier's life or career, apart from his will which indicates that he died in 1793. The majority of Crozier's trade card is taken up with written information supplying the trader's name, address and list of goods and services, but it also displays an ornately framed illustration of a Turkish man drawing a sword. This is presumably a reference to the location of Crozier's sop, which was """"at the Turks Head"""".

The method had been invented in the eponymous town by a turner named Jordon, who created intricate patterns by inlaying an item with different coloured wood, and had become sought-after early in the eighteenth century.
