Description:
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1893. First Edition. 309pp; green cloth, Sarah Wyman Whitman trade binding design with stylized flowering tree front panel, title in gilt on elongated trunk, the tree's roots enclosing the author's name. A tiny bit of rubbing to bottom of spine, endpapers sunned at edges, early owner's pencil signature on ffep, else a very good + copy. This is a selection of nine short stories about Jewett's native Maine. Published just three years before her masterpiece, THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS, these stories show Jewett as a confident and mature writer. Long seen as a minor voice of the local color school, she is now regarded as an American master whose writing influenced Kate Chopin, Willa Cather and others well into the 20th century. BAL 10902. Allen and Gullans, p. 103.

Description:
[Boston, Ma], 1865. Issued by Abby W. May as Chairman of the Executive Committee. Circular, 6" x 16-5/8", printed on newsprint, one side. Folded once lengthwise and then into fourths; 1/2" paper residue from small round price sticker (removed) at upper right corner (not affecting text), generally very good. Abby [Abigail] W. May (1829-1888), a prime mover in boston reform circles for more than 30 years, was active in charitable work, freedman's aid and women's suffrage. She joined the New England Women's Auxiliary Association of the United States Sanitary Commission in December 1861, serving first as Secretary. From February 1862 through March 1866 May acted as chairman of the executive committee. "In his capacity she received and disbursed money and supplies estimated at nearly a million dollars in value." [NAW] Issued after the end of hostilities, the circular looks to July 4th as the wind up of the work of the Auxiliary. May quotes at length, however, from a letter from the head of supply…

Description:
Paris: Librairie Plon, Les Petits-Fils de Plon et Nourrit, 1927. First edition, one of 15 on papier de Chine de tete copies, from a total issue of 400. Bound by H. BLANCHETIERE in full navy morocco, edges with gilt double fillets, panelled spines with gilt lettering, doublures with panels of pink moire surrounded by navy morocco with gilt fillets, guards also of pink moire, marbled inner leaves, a.e.g., slipcases. Original printed wrappers and backstrip bound in, fine - a beautiful set. Paul Bourget (1852-1935) was a novelist and critic of penetrating psychological analysis. His novels, which describe the life of the leisured classes, almost always deal with a dilemma of conscience and/or some sociological problem. The moralizing tone especially evident in his later writings may be attributed to his growing Roman Catholic and Royalist sympathies. Perhaps because of this tone, Bourget's criticism is often now valued more highly than his fiction.

Description:
New York: The Viking Press, 1947. First Edition. 8vo; green wove cloth stamped in blind on front cover and lettered in gold on spine, pictorial dust jacket by Leo Manson, book very good with bottom of spine a little ruffled, jacket lightly used with some wear to spine ends, bottom edge with sprinkling of brown dots, ink name and date on inside front pastedown (covered by jacket flap). The author's first and only novel. Though her reputation lies in her writing on gastronomy and travel, M.F.K. Fisher is remarkable, whatever the genre, for her eye for the salient detail which illuminates character.
