Written in brown ink in at least a dozen hands, approximately half-full. Reverse calf, stamped in blind, single metal clasp (front board loose, some slight dampstaining). A diverse account book containing over 300 transactions, each individually signed and dated, detailing the amount received or dispersed by the bookkeeper in this early 19th century building practice. The records display receipt and exchange of money over items ranging from painting a house to completing a roof. Several well-known New York streets are named, Avenues C and D, 2nd and 4th, and streets Christie, Columbia, Broome and Allen, among some. Contains a double fore-edge painting (one a view of the Castle on the Rhine and the other of Oxfordshire with fishing scene). The book is inscribed in a contemporary hand to "J. L. Sealy from his affectionate friend T. W. Tindal."

From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., with his bookplate, and inscribed by the author: To my good friends Douglas and Mary Lee Fairbanks, who many years ago helped bring me back to life with an advance course in L'Attagre! With gratitude and affection, Christopher Short / Kent / 1972." Fairbanks (1909-2000) was an iconic American actor from Hollywood’s Golden Era (his credits include “Gunga Din”), and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II. By all accounts he was very charming and popular, which all we've got to explain this unique association copy.

Publisher’s purple cloth boards, a bit worn and faded; foxing throughout, but still a solid set. “Almost a cyclopedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention of the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statements regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people.” Field 949. (Laid-in material lightly wrinkled along the edges, and stained at the top edge from a rusty paperclip.) A nice copy.

Early ownership inscription, “Ex libris 1850.” Pictorial wood-engraved ex-libris by Leo Wyatt for Lord Norwich on front free endpaper. Important study on the nature of hypochrondriasis by Fracassini. Today, hypochondriasis is a mental disturbance characterized by unfounded fear of serious illness, but in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was a common physical condition.
