hand-coloured sepia lithograph. RARE view from the first edition of 'Borneo and the Indian Archipelago, with Drawings of Costumes and Scenery'. Frank Marryat (1826-1855) lived a short life as a sailor, artist, and author. These drawings were made as a 17-year-old midshipman during his trip on HMS Samarang in 1843 which also touched on the Philippines. It was the last Samarang trip of Sir Edward Belcher, sailing through Singapore, Hongkong and Macao. Condition: with paper crease and repaired tear at top right corner, small paper loss at bottom left corner, water stains along left margin, all not affecting plate, light paper toning, cleaned, still quite good. original hand-colour lithograph. Zoological prints from 'The Exploration of Kina Balu, North Borneo'; plate 118. First edition, the plates were lithographed by the author from his own water-colour sketches. The hand-coloured plates depict insects, mammals and birds, some of the latter in the style of Keulemans. The authour, an ornithologist, spent four years in North Borneo, Java, Palawan and the state of Malacca. He brought back specimens of many new animals including 45 species of birds. Sometimes bound into "Navigantium atque itinerantium bibliotheca ; Or, A complete collection of voyages and travels" by John Harris. Shows California as an island, an incomplete Australia, a hint of the West Coast of New Zealand, an interesting NE Coast of Asia, including "Iesso" but lacking NW Coast of America. Various trade winds and currents are depicted with arrows and shading. Herman Moll (c. 1654-1732) was one of the most important London mapmakers in the first half of the 18th century. Moll was probably born in Bremen, Germany. He moved to London to escape the Scanian Wars. He first worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt's ill-fated "English Atlas", and then worked for Sir Jonas Moore, Grenville Collins, John Adair, and - as here - for Seller & Price.
