Description:
Toronto: Queen's Printer, 1984. 668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few… Read more

Upperville, Virginia: Oak Spring Garden Library, Upperville, Virginia, 1989., 1989. 147 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Patterned endpapers. "(This) is the first of a series of catalogues describing selections of the rare books and other material in the Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Mrs. Paul Mellon. The 'Sylva', which deals with books and manuscripts on trees, will be the smallest volume of the series, describing nearly fifty books, manuscripts, or drawings, from a tiny 1555 book on oaks to early nineteenth-century advice on large-scale tree-planting, a range including both great books, like Evelyn's 'Sylva', Duhamel's 'Traite des Arbres', and Michaux's 'North American Sylva', and more modest ones, like Marshall's 'American Grove', which helped introduce the riches of American forests to European gardens in the eighteenth century. Each description makes clear the background of each book and its relationship to others, while a… Read more

Upperville, Virginia: Oak Spring Garden Library, 1990. 276 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Patterned endpapers. "(This) is the second of a series of catalogues describing selections of the rare books and other material in the Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Mrs Paul Mellon. The 'Pomona' describes a hundred books and manuscripts about fruit, with illustrations taken from some of the most beautiful books on the subject, as well as original drawings or paintings. The earliest book described is Bussato's 'Giardino di Agricoltura' of 1592, the latest 'The Herefordshire Pomona', an encyclopaedia of apples and pears from the 1870s. In between there is a gathering of fruit books large and small: La Quintinie's 'Instruction pour les Jardins fruitiers', first published in 1690 and translated by John Evelyn three years later, Duhamel's 'Traite des Arbres fruitiers', and nearly fifty others from France and Britain, among them Brookshaw's… Read more

Description:
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1994. 521 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "Mrs. Mathews, descendant of a pioneer Oakville family, traces the development of a typical Ontario lake port and pictures social life at the various stages of the town's development. The history is complete, beginning with the earliest settlement and ending at a period at which Oakville has changed its character completely. It is based on wide research, begun out of genuine interest and curiosity, into a part of the province about which very little has been written. Mrs. Mathews has combed such primary sources as family papers, local newspapers, and archive documents. She has given an intimate picture of the people, houses, and public buildings of Oakville, and of activities along "The Sixteen", the creek which has been so important in its life. But Mrs. Mathews does more than this. She places the development of the village and town in its proper setting in Ontario's history,… Read more

Burlington, Ontario: Windsor Publications, 1986. 134 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "The story of Oakville's evolution from a mill at the mouth of the Sixteen (Mile Creek) to a thriving commercial harbour is told with humour, insight, and humanity. The growth of a community out of the wilderness is an inspiring tale of vision and hard work, told in first-hand accounts of events ranging from the first terrible winters to the coming of the first automobile. The men and women who built Oakville speak eloquently of their struggle and their triumph. A special 'Partners in Progress' section (by Jeffrey Charles Martin) details the businesses that have grown and thrived in Oakville through the years." Small area of waviness at bottom corner of approx. last 60 pages, slight browning to edges of text block, slight bump at bottom of spine, scattered tiny soiling specks on covers. London, Ontario: Burnell Creighton , 2007. 168 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs and reproductions. "This collection is based on the life's work of David Ashe, who while employed as a draftsperson with the Town of Oakville compiled a listing of legal survey plans and registry information on the streets of Oakville. Being a researcher at heart, he went further and spent countless hours of his spare time gathering the history behind Oakville's streets. Joyce Burnell has picked a selection of Ashe's street histories and has added several Oakville landmarks - some of which are not longer here. Add to this, interesting archival images - some never before seen - combined with newer colour photographs and you have an intriguing reflection of Oakville's unique history. With close to 100 street name histories and over 40 landmarks featured, these interesting vignettes make for an easy, enjoyable read. This book links Oakville's street names to local,… Read more

Description:
London: Adam & Charles Black, 1967. 427 pp, 9 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w with drawings, reproductions and photographs. "(This book) fills a wide gap in the history of costume, since former books on the subject have concentrated on the fashions of the more leisured classes (a minority) rather than on the clothes worn by people at work. The occupations covered include those of outdoor manual worker, tradesmen, craftsmen, miners, seamen, public and domestic servants. In describing working clothes, the authors show that they gradually evolved from a comparative uniformity in medieval times to a later rich variety related to particular occupations. (An) entertaining book for the general reader as well as a source of historically accurate information for teachers and students of social history, theatrical producers and all interested in the dress of working men and women through the centuries."
