(PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 1840). ALS. 2pgs. November 18, 1840. Cincinnati, Ohio. An autograph letter signed “J Burnet” by Ohio lawyer and politician Jacob Burnet (1770-1853). It is addressed to James Dunlap of Pittsburg. Burnet replies to Dunlap’s letter stating his concerns about Pennsylvania politics in light of the recent 1840 Presidential election, in which William Henry Harrison defeated Martin Van Buren. Harrison would die only a month into his Presidency. Mentioning a “schism” at one point, Burnet seems to anticipate the national divide that would eventually lead to the American Civil War, although this may have referred to economic issues rather than the question of slavery: “Dear Sir I have received your letter of the 12th inst and read it with interest. OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745-1807). Ellsworth was a Continental Congressman, served as a Senator from 1789 to 1796, and is believed to have coined the term “United States.” He drafted legislation that created the Federal court system and served as the second Chief Justice. ALS. 1pg. June 29, 1791. Windsor, [Connecticut]. An autograph letter signed “Oliver Ellsworth” as Senator from Connecticut. He wrote to Governor William Paterson of New Jersey: “Dear Sir, You will have the goodness to excuse my troubling you a moment in behalf of an Ensign Bissel of my vicinity who has served in the 1t Regt. & has an arrear of pay due to him. He has been once to Philadelphia to receive it & was there informed that it had been paid to a Maj. Heart. Maj. Heart is not in Connecticut & informs that the money is in the hands of Capt. OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745-1807). Ellsworth was a Founding Father, lawyer, Senator, and United States Supreme Court Chief Justice from Connecticut. ADS. 2pgs. September 17, 1779. Hartford. An autograph document twice signed “Oliver Ellsworth” (once recto and once verso). The Revolutionary War-era document directs the Connecticut State Treasury to pay Ellsworth £1909.7.6 for prosecuting various people. It lists seventeen separate cases and the amount owed for each one. The document is mainly in Ellsworth’s hand with additions in another hand. There are also two other signatures. It is in very good condition with losses along the edges and wear to the numerous folds.

OLIVER WOLCOTT, JR. (1760-1833). Wolcott served as the second Secretary of the Treasury from 1795 to 1800, as a Judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit from 1801 to 1802, and as Governor of Connecticut from 1817 to 1827. DS. 1 pg. 8” x 10”. March 22, 1793. Treasury Department, Comptroller’s Office. A document signed by “Oliv. Wolcott” to “Jonathan Fitch Esq.” in the form of a typed circular: “Sir, the thirty-fourth section of the Collection Law provides that certain rates per cent, shall be allowed for the tares of Coffee, Pepper and Sugar other than Loaf Sugar. – Upon this provision a doubt has existed whether the per centage ought not in certain cases, to be computed upon the Cwt. or one hundred and twelve pounds; or ought in all cases to be computed upon the 100 lb. or short hundred. – The practice at different Ports has on this point been, and continues to be dissimilar. – It is necessary to produce uniformity. (MEXICAN WAR). ALS. 1pg. May 24, 1846. On Board the Steamer Diana. An autograph letter signed “Tho.s R. Heritage”. Heritage had just enlisted in the United States Army as part of the Louisville Light Artillery and was leaving via New Orleans to fight in the Mexican-American War. He wrote home to his wife and daughter. “My Dear Wife/ It is with a heart somewhat full that I address you at this time but it is not because I have volunteerd [sic] in the service of my Country and bound for the seat of war but from the fact that money has not been furnished me according to promise that I might leave you in a better situation Capt E.B. Gallagher” entitled “Punishment”: “Punish Christopher Eyran, one dozen lashes on bare back with the car on bare back for repeated drunkenness, and more particularly for being drunk on the 12th inst.” The document is in fair condition with folds and separations.

(STANDARD OIL OF CALIFORNIA). An archive of thirteen black and white photographs of the Standard Oil of California plane, a Ford Trimotor. Some of the photographs show men getting out of the plane, emblazoned with “Standard Oil Company of California” and others show the plane parked on the runway. There is also an intriguing image of a young aviatrix holding a bouquet, a photograph of a two seater biplane, and an image of a mechanic checking under the hood for a female driver. The accompanying envelope states that these photographs were taken at the Oakland Airport on March 25, 1929. According to an aviation history website, Standard Oil of California purchased a 1927 Ford Trimotor airplane in 1928 and named it Standard No. 1. HARRY S. TRUMAN (1884-1972). Truman was the Thirty-Third President. PS. 10 ½” x 13 ½”. No date [circa 1952]. No place [likely Washington]. An oversized studio photograph inscribed “Kindest regards & best wishes to Hon. Augier Biddle Duke. Harry S Truman” in brown ink on the lower border. Duke was the American ambassador to El Salvador. The image is in very fine condition with very minor faults to two corners.

PS. Henry Miller was a pioneering writer known for his frank sexuality. His best books include Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, The Colossus of Maroussi and The Air-Conditioned Nightmare. PS. 11" x 14". 2/3/75. No place. An oversized photograph inscribed "For Charles Henry Miller 2/3/75" in red ink. The grainy black and white image shows an older Miller looking into the camera. It is backed to a thick board and is in fine condition

HERBERT HOOVER (1874-1964). Hoover was the Thirty-First President. PS. 13 ½” x 20”. No date. No place. A giant Harris and Ewing studio photograph signed “To the 16th Assembly District Republican Club With Good Wishes of Herbert Hoover” on the lower mount. The 16th Assembly District was most likely in California. It is mounted to a board and has some faults to the lower left margin. It is in very good condition. This is the largest Hoover signed photograph I have ever seen.

STAN LAUREL (1890-1965) and OLIVER HARDY (1892-1957). The skinny, American-born Laurel and the chubbier, British-born Hardy were one of the most popular comedy duos of early cinema. They appeared in over one hundred films together, and their most popular was probably Babes In Toyland. PS. 10 ½” x 13 ¾”. June 21, 1940. No place. An oversized black and white studio photograph signed “Stan Laurel” and “Oliver Hardy”; the Hardy is a rubber stamp signature. Laurel inscribed it “June 21st 1940. Our best wishes always Mr. Knight, Sincerely Stan Laurel” and the Hardy is a rubber stamped signature. They are shown in their famous costumes, complete with bowler hats. The Laurel signature is a bit lighter than the darker Hardy stamped signature, but both are completely legible. It is beautifully framed to an overall size of 18 ½” by 21 ½”. This photograph sold at Pacific Auctions in 1997, and it was also sold by Walter Benjamin. Laurel and Hardy photographs of this size are rare.

THOMAS A. EDISON (1847-1931). Edison was an American inventor best known for inventing the electric light bulb. PS. 11” x 14”. N.d. N.p. A black-and-white image signed “To Miss Barbara Ann Payne Thos. A Edison”. The print reproduces a drawing of Edison in three-quarter view. Per materials that accompany the photograph, Barbara Ann, the daughter of Lillian and Judd Payne, was born in December 1926 and then mailed this image; the father was in publishing and worked for Funk & Wagnalls, among other companies. Photographs of this size are much scarcer than normal 8” x 10” Edison signed photos. It is generally in fine condition with the extreme upper right corner missing and light chipping and faults to the margins.

PS. Lady Bird Johnson was First Lady, wife of Lyndon Johnson. PS. 11" x 14". No date [circa 1981]. No place. An oversized black and white photograph signed "For Catharine La Croix with all good wishes Lady Bird Johnson". The pose shows her sitting in a chair. It is accompanied by a 1981 letter from the LBJ Library. It is in extremely fine condition

HERBERT HOOVER (1874-1964). Hoover was the Thirty-First President. PS. 11” x 14”. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “The Kind Regards of Herbert Hoover”. The black-and-white image depicts Hoover with his arms around his dog King Tut, a Belgian shepherd. Hoover signed on the bottom margin. It is in fine condition.
