Linen-backed silver prints (47); Each 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches
This interesting presentation album shows three different locomotive works, all owned by the American Locomotive Company, which were converted to munitions production during the first World War.
The American Locomotive Company was formed by the merger of several smaller locomotive manufacturers, the Brooks Locomotive Works in Dunkirk, NY, the Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works in Paterson, NJ, the Dickson Manufacturing Company in Scranton, PA, the Manchester Locomotive Works in Manchester, NH, the Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works in Pittsburgh, PA, the Rhode Island Locomotive Works in Providence, RI, the Richmond Locomotive Works in Richmond, VA, and the Schenectady Locomotive Works in Schenectady, NY. Two of these companies, Richmond Locomotive Works and Brooks Locomotive Works, as well as Montreal Locomotive Works, which ALCO purchased in 1904, are represented in the album.
At the beginning of the album there is a four-page typed index of… Read More

Description:
Photo album; Albumen prints (15); Photographs 6 x 4 inches; overall 10 x 8 1/2 inches
Photographically-illustrated album of the 1867 class of the Garrett Biblical Institute (now Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary) in Evanston, Indiana. The album is unusual because many of the albumen-print portraits are accompanied by hand-written "autobiographies" of the subjects. The album begins with a frontispiece-photograph of the college itself, followed by three unidentified portraits. These images are followed by photographs and manuscript biographies of students Samuel Hawley Adams, B.E. Edgell, Samuel Newell Griffith (the album's owner), Clark P. Hand, Gideon Libby, Edward McChesney, William E. Morgan, John Poucher, William A. Spencer, Martin L. Wells, Rufus H. Wilkinson. The students describe their places of birth, upbringings, and what led them down the path of the Lord. The biographies are generally quite thorough, running a couple pages, most relatively straightforward. The longest biography is… Read More

Description:
Silver print, 8 x 10 inches; subject ID verso.
A well-composed portrait of Henrietta Gloff, who for many years worked as an accomplished courier guide for the Southern Pacific Railway.
A 1930 article published in the Los Angeles Times (accompanied by a reproduction of the present photo), states that, "The Santa Fe Railway, in conjunction with Fred Harvey, has built up highway tours and cruises covering practically all of New Mexico and Northern Arizona, designating them as Indian-detours and Motor-cruises, and placing the various travelers in the hands of young women, college graduates, who are known as Courier Guides." The article goes on to describe Gloff as "one of the most widely known of the Couriers, who has piloted many people from Southern California through the strange areas of New Mexico and Arizona and up Into the Rainbow Bridgo Country."

Description:
Albumen print; Image 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; sheet 6 x 9 inches.
This handsome portrait is a cropped version of one of seven taken in the summer of 1880 by the Edy Brothers, a London, Ontario-based photo firm, when Whitman was in Canada to visit his close friend Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke.
According to the Whitman archive, Bucke had previously sent Whitman a portrait of himself taken by the Edy Brothers, and he was impressed by the work, declaring, "this is taken by some little man with no reputation at all. It seems to me these little fellows beat our city men: some of the strokes of these out-of-the-way fellows are masterly. . . . The city photographers like things toned down, polished, in the mode." The poet was seemingly unaware that the Edy Brothers, James Newbury and William Daniel, were not exactly artists "with no reputation at all," as their work had been widely recognized and praised throughout Canada and the United States.
