Despite their long relationship, "Les Chants des Morts" is the only illustrated book Picasso and renown art reviewer and publisher Tériade ever collaborated on. Pierre Reverdy finished a series of 43 poems titled Le Chant des Morts and Picasso illustrated his handwritten manuscript page by page in the manner of old illuminated manuscripts, adding another layer of artistic expression to Reverdy's somber poems.

Limited numbered edition, total edition 253 copies, of which this copy is one of the 30 copies on Arches wove paper, signed in colophon by Miró and Tzara. With one lithograph with collage-highlighted in cover, one color lithograph in frontispiece, and 70 lithographs in color and black by Miro, accompany Tzara poems and justification page. Miró raw, primordial drawings, amplify the flow of the text, creating a parallel visual language which give no respite, forcing the progression of the pages in a striking conjunction with Tzara poem. Portfolio containing 24 lithographs, including two in full-page and one on the cover which bears a printed reproduction of Picasso and Cocteau's handwriting. The portfolio was produced by Cocteau to mark the occasion of the artist's 80th birthday and contains reproductions Picasso's major works from 1916-1961. It is signed in pencil on the colophon by both Picasso and Cocteau. Loose as issued and housed within the original green paper wrappers and guarded in a costumed slip chemise and slip case. Total edition 255 copies, of which this specific copy is one of the copies reserved for the artist and publisher, unnumbered, and printed on handmade paper with watermark facsimiles of the signatures of Picasso and Cocteau, as used on the first 56 copies. Bordas, Paris, 1950. This portfolio contains a poem by Tristan Tzara, cofounder of the Dada movement, who asked Picasso to collaborate with him in the creation of this book. The artist contributed 9 original lithographs for this work, which also includes an extra suite of prints in Japan paper. Picasso departed from his typical technique of creating lithographs by using his finger to paint the images instead of a lithographic brush. This is especially evident by the various fingerprint marks in the images. The total amount of copies for this edition are 350 numbered copies, of which this one is one of 30 copies on Hollande van Gelder Zonen signed in pencil by Picasso and Tzara on justification page. The woodcuts were engraved by Georges Aubert after Picasso drawings. This copy is one of the 100 editions reserved for the collaborators in Roman Numbers, of which this is n. XXXI, and includes two additional suites of 21 woodcuts. One suite is printed on light blue wove paper and the other on cream wove paper, each suite is collected in paper wrappers. Loose as issued. Portfolio, plus two suites, are all guarded in the original chemise and slipcase. There are two small cracks on the bottom of the spine of the chemise and some minimal staining, otherwise in very good condition. Ref: Monod 10485
