Popular in the eighteenth-century it is played by two paired teams, the pastime is referenced on four occasions in Pride and Prejudice (with mastery of the somewhat complicated rules used as a tool of social distinction by Lady Catherine de Bourgh), and is frequently mentioned in James Woodforde’s The Diary of a Country Parson 1758-1802. . The only work of fiction by antiquary and engraver Joseph Strutt (1749-1802), an historical romance set in fifteenth century England, published together with his play Ancient Times.
