Description:
London: George Allen and Unwin Limited, 1959. Hardcover. Very good. Second impression. An empty envelope hand-addressed by Queen Mary is laid in, along with an autograph letter signed (ALS) on Blenheim Palace stationery from Alexandra Mary Hilda (Cadogan) Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, to her sister, Edith. The standard biography of Mary of Teck, Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from the accession of her husband, King George V, in 1910 until his death in 1936, and the mother of kings Edward VIII and George VI and Mary, Princess Royal. Her intellect, good sense, and artistic taste fitted her to be the wife of a sovereign, and her concern with the welfare of servicemen in World Wars I and II helped to make her popular with all classes of the British people. Frequently depicted in popular culture, among the actresses who have portrayed Queen Mary include Dame Wendy Hiller (Crown Matrimonial), Dame Flora Robson (A King's Story), Dame Peggy Ashcroft (Edward & Mrs.…

Description:
Mountrath, County Laois, Ireland: The Dolmen Press Limited, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Nine color plates. First edition thus. In 1917, the Irish artist Harry Clarke was commissioned by the Right Honourable Laurence Ambrose Waldron PC to make a series of miniature stained glass panels to illustrate J.M. Synge's poem Queens, to be set as a frieze in his library. The nine panels were completed in September 1917 and, as Thomas Bodkin wrote of them, "they have no exact precedent in the history of stained glass. They are extraordinarily accomplished technically especially in view of the small area of glass in each panel, and are iconographically intriguing." Each panel is approximately 300 millimetres high and 180 millimetres wide, the reproductions in this book being something over half linear scale. Prospectus laid in. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt stamping. A fine copy.
