Revised edition. Methuen New Theatrescript series. *Playwright and director Stephen Lowe was born in Nottingham in 1947. The play was first performed in Plymouth in 1978. The production has been revived several times; a two handed version was produced in 2011; and in 2010 Lowe worked with a South African company on a new version of the play, set in Cape Town in the 1950s. The novel The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was first published in 1914. The author was born Robert Noonan [or Croker] in Dublin in 1870, t he illegitimate son of Mary Ann Noonan and Samuel Croker. His pseudonym, which for many years was spelled Tressall, was standardized to Tressell in 1955.

The foreword, appropriately for a 'working-class classic', is by the President and General Secretary of the National Federation of Building Trade Operatives.
