One of 290 copies (Edition limited to 290 unnumbered copies, including 10 on vellum, we offer one of the 280 on Arnold's handmade paper). Green buckram spine, with paper covered boards. The paper shows leaves blowing in the wind. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The paper label is a little rubbed and darkened, but still legible. Externally very good overall. Inside, the book is an immaculate copy, with fractional foxing to the initial pages, and a touch of darkening to the front and rear end papers, otherwise spotless. Opening with a nice ornamented border in black figuring on top Janus, on left the medal of Comodus, and the Amazon and her moon-shaped shield, and below the Nemean lion's skin and Herakles' mace. Plymouth: n/a, 1829. An attractive original watercolour of the beach and harbour at Plymouth, with title and date of 1829. By unknown French artist. Mounted on white card (somewhat darkened). The picture itself is in very good, bright condition. Held in a later (mid 20th century) wooden frame. Watercolour is 13.5cm x 9cm Frame is 22cm x 18cm. Originally published in English as "Enquiries touching the Diversity of Languages, and Religions through the cheife Parts of the World." in 1614, this copy is the first French edition. The vellum is a little darkened and marked, but without chips or tears. Owner's label is clean and bright. The title page has been reinforced to the open edge. The binding is very slightly shaken, but holding well. Fractional darkening only. A couple of tiny tears to the edges of the end papers, without loss. Overall a very nice copy.
