Pope Clement X was the head of the Catholic Church from 1670 to 1676. He was born as Emilio Bonaventura Altieri in Rome in 1590, and he served as a cardinal for over 40 years before being elected as pope. In 1669 when 62 Cardinals could not agree on a successor to Clement IX and after 5 months of deliberation the conclave finally chose the elderly Emilio Altieri as the next Pope, expecting that due to his age he would not have the papacy long.
