JEAN DE LAMBERVILLE (1633-1714). Lamberville was a French Jesuit priest who landed in New France in 1669 and was largely stationed in Montreal. He was an important missionary to the Onondagas and converted their chief, and he was a conduit between the Five Nations and the European settlers. He was one of the most influential Frenchman in the New World. ADS. 1pg. 7 ½” x 5 ½”. July 15, 1705. Paris. An autograph document signed “Jean De Lamberville” twice, once in the text and once at the conclusion. Writing in French, Lamberville penned: “I, the undersigned Jean De Lamberville, priest of the company of Jesus and attorney of the mission of said company in New France, called Canada, in North America, confess to have received of the sum of eighty livres for the last six months of the year 1705 on account of 800 livres rent [government obligation], belonging to said mission and issued on the 7th of January 1682. WINFIELD SCOTT (1786-1866). Scott was an American Army General and politician. DS. 1pg. October 29, 1811. Baltimore. A partially-printed military supply document, signed “W. Scott” as Major General. It concerns Scott’s use of firewood for the month of October 1811. This is a scarce document from early in Scott’s military career. It is in very good condition.

EUGENE FIELD (1850-1895). Field was an American poet best remembered for “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod” and “Little Boy Blue”. PS. 4 ¼” x 6 ½”. No date. No place. A cabinet card signed “Eugene Field” in the lower right corner. The image shows Field in a suit and staring slightly off-camera. RareBookHub shows only one Field signed cabinet card ever selling, and noted signed photograph collector Wesley Marans did not have one. There is light wear to the corners (including by the signature’s paraph) and some faint staining to the image. The image was taken by Place and Coover.

ALS. Nicholson was a Revolutionary-era Pennsylvania state official. He partnered with Robert Morris in western land speculation that bankrupted both. He was sent to debtor's prison in 1800 and died there shortly thereafter. ADS. 1pg. 8 ¾" x 8. Jany 21, 1783. Comptr Generals Office Phiada. A very rare autograph document signed "Jno Nicholson": "Capt Joseph Blewer Esqr acknowledges to have recd the sum of four thousand five hundred and eighty five pounds and Six pence of Samuel Massey Esqr. at the time and for the purpose Mentd. within which he had borrowed of Sd. Massey as, he declares upon Interest, he also produces a copy of his accts. Current wherein he charges himself and accts. for the expenditure of the sum aforesaid... £1000 were pd by his draft on the navy board in fav of I Hood." HARRY TRUMAN (1884-1972). Truman was the Thirty-third President. MAJOR GENERAL MELVIN J. MAAS (1898-1964). Maas was an United States Congressman from Minnesota, serving from 1927 to 1933. He also served in the Marine Corps and retired as a Major General in August 1952. In 1949, he became a member of the President’s Committee on Employment of the Physically Handicapped, and served as chairman from 1954 to 1964. In August 1951, he was stricken with total blindness, but continued to serve in the Marines. Maas won the prestigious Commander-In-Chief award twice, once in 1949 as a Colonel and again in 1952 as a Major General. ALS. 1pg. 6 ¼” x 9 ¼”. Feb. 12, 1952. Washington. JULIA GRANT (1826-1902). The wife of Ulysses, Julia was First Lady from 1869 to 1877. DS. 1pg. July 28, 1890. New York. A check signed “Mrs. Julia D. Grant”, paying Thomas Bagot $78 and charging it “to Special Account”. Bagot endorsed it on the back. The check has light wrinkling and other minor faults. RareBookHub shows no Julia Grant checks ever selling.

NATHANIEL CURRIER (1813-1888). Currier was a famous American lithographer who, in partnership with James Ives, created one of the most famous artistic companies in American history. ANS. 1pg. 7” x 2”. October 24, 1838. New York. A rare autograph document signed “Nathl Currier” on a small slip of paper: “Received New York Oct. 24th 1838 from A.J. Davis Esq Thirty Dollars on a/c Nathl Currier”. I could locate no sales records for a Currier manuscript in Rarebookhub.com or American Book Prices Current (same for James Ives). Alexander J. Davis (1803-1892) was a prominent American architect who specialized in Gothic Revival, and designed Jay Gould’s estate Lyndhurst. In 1837, Jackson published his book Rural Residences with lithographs by Nathaniel Currier; perhaps this receipt was paying for Currier’s art in the book or other work Currier did for Davis. The document has dark ink and a thin mounting remnant to the top margin of the verso.

PS. 3 ½” x 4 ½”. No date [circa 1955]. New York. A photograph signed “To Mrs. John T. Willis with kind regards Hans Hoffman” on the verso. The black and white portrait shows an older painter standing. The signed image is accompanied by a March 27, 1955 letter from his wife Maria to Mrs. Willis, as well as the original envelope.

WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-1896). A British designer, writer, and socialist activist, Morris is best known as a major participant in the Arts and Crafts Movement. ALS. 1pg. August 26. [no year]. Kelmscott, House, Hammersmith. An autograph letter signed “William Morris”. He wrote to his friend and fellow socialist Charles Rowley, seemingly declining an invitation to give a speech. “Dear Sir Many thanks for your kind invitation but I am sorry to say I cannot engage myself any more at present, as my list is very full. I am Dear Sir Yours faithfully William Morris”. In very good condition with some toning. There is also a diagonal line, like a cross-out, through the entire text. Morris autograph letters are rare.

TIMOTHY PICKERING (1745-1829). Pickering was the third United States Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams between 1795 and 1800. He had previously served as United States Postmaster General and Secretary of War. He later represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress as a member of the Federalist Party. ADS. 8” x 4”. January 22, 1783. N.p. An autographed document signed in the third person: “Received of Timy Pickering…One hundred and thirteen dollars and fifteen nintieths in full fraye rations & due last year as paid, having signed duplicates”. The receipt is signed at the conclusion by “W Barber Major & Asst Infy…”. He is most likely Major William Barber, who served as a New Jersey major and aide-de-camp during the American Revolution. JOHN FLAXMAN, SR. (1726-1803). Flaxman was a British artist and sculptor. ADS. pg. 5” x 7”. August 16, 1763. An autograph document signed “John Flaxman” indicating the sale of a bust by to “Mr. Nourse”. The receipt lists the cost of the bust and related packing box, and notes that payment was duly received. The receipt is in fine condition.

SAMUEL HUNTINGTON (1731-1796). Huntington was a Declaration of Independence Signer from Connecticut, and he also signed the Articles of Confederation. He also served as Governor of Connecticut. ABRAHAM DAVENPORT (1715-1789). Davenport was a Revolution-era Connecticut politician and militia colonel. ELIPHALET DYER (1721-1807). Dyer was a Connecticut lawyer and a delegate to the Continental Congress. MATTHEW GRISWOLD (1714-1799). An autograph letter signed “W.R. Danforth” to John R. Parker about a Rhode Island semaphore system for faster communications: “The committee appointed on Saturday evening last on the subject of a Marine Telegraph in this port, have met but are not able to agree on a report, without some aid from you, and have requested me to address and request an answer as early as possible. We are as yet not impressed what benefit you are to derive from the establishment except from the suppling of books and suits of flags at the various Stations. The Memoirs Of Richard Nixon inscribed “To William Schneiderman with best wishes from Richard Nixon” on the title page. The interior pages are in fine condition. The dust jacket has a clipped price and some wear, especially to the spine.

JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY (1849-1916). Riley was an American writer and poet sometimes known as “The Hoosier Poet”. Riley wrote the 1885 poem “Little Orphant Annie”, which inspired the beloved character Little Orphan Annie. ALS. 5” x 4”. 1pg. July 15, 1892. Indianapolis. An autograph letter signed “J W Riley” to Thomas Donaldson: “Your appreciate of my little tribute to the author of ‘Kathleen Mavourneen’ is most gratefully received, and your request for autographic copy of the same – I gladly answer as desired – This being my earliest opportunity as your letter (mistakenly directed) has but just now found me.” In 1837, the English composer wrote the song “Kathleeen Mavourneen.” The letter, on his imprinted card, has light soiling and is in very good condition.

GIACOMO RIMINI (1887-1952). Rimini was a baritone born in Italy and a naturalized American. He is best known for his interpretations of Verdi, and being married to Rosa Raisa. PS. 8” x 10”. No date. No place. A studio photograph of Rimini in operatic costume, signed “Giacomo Rimini” on the vertical left margin. It is inscribed to Harry Newton Redman (1869-1958), an American composer and instructor at the New England Conservatory of Music. The photograph was taken in Chicago. The photograph has some silvering, and the inscription is dark, but inscribed along a dark portion of the image. It is in very good condition.

ROBERT HALLOWELL RICHARDS (1844-?). A famous metallurgist, Richards was head of the M.I.T. mining engineering department, as well as president of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE (1846-1914). By twenty, Westinghouse had invented a device for replacing derailed railroad cars, and another that enabled track switching. In 1868, he patented his famous air brake. He created hundreds of inventions and organized more than fifty companies. Autograph Letter Signed. 4pp. 4” x 6”. Feb 8, 1895. An autograph letter signed “Wm R Richards” to an unnamed general. ROBERT TODD LINCOLN (1843-1926). Lincoln was the eldest son and only surviving child of Abraham Lincoln. He was Secretary of War under President Garfield and Minister to England under President Harrison. Upon George Pullman’s death in 1897, Lincoln became acting executive and then president of The Pullman Company, resigning the position in 1911. ALS. 3pg. 4 ½” x 7”. January 1, 1891. An autograph letter signed “Robert T. Lincoln”: “I am not so happy as I have Mrs. Lincoln with me – She & our girls will come…later reaching London at the start of February. It is with great regret that I find myself engaged both for lunch & dinner for any day until I go away at midnight Saturday.
