Fielding also brought real-life into fiction by making Brewster the physician who attends the philosopher Square at the end of Tom Jones.

Sir William Drummond, of Logiealmond (1770?1828) was educated at St. Andrews and Christ Church, Oxford; he had been a Member of Parliament when he published this volume. He published a number of other scholarly works on classical literature. However, it was his Academical Questions (1805), in which his scepticism, derived from David Hume, about various claims in the Jewish and Christian religions outraged many readers, not to mention those who hadn't read the book but had heard that it was "heretical." In a private letter to Lord Aberdeen, he wrote, "I have attempted to veil its real meaning; but I am…

Hector Macneill (17461818) spent most of his early career working in the West Indies, particularly in Jamaica, but he found time to write his first poem before departing for Jamaica, The Harp: a Legendary Tale, which he published in 1789. His most famous poem, is, of course, this one, first published in 1795; there were 14 editions in the first year. The Critical Review noticed it in the same year, saying that it should be no surprise that the work was so popular in Scotland, "when we consider the merit and moral tendency of the production. The…

Wynne is probably William Wynn[e] (1709 - 1760), the Church of England Clergyman and Welsh-language poet, as the wording on the armorial book plate is in Welsh: "Ne bydd doeth Na Ddarllenno." The motto on the Cardiff Free Library is similar: "'Ni bydd doeth ni ddarlleno" (he who does not read will not be wise). Daniel Waterland (1683 - 1740) was one of many theologians and clerics who published a reply to Matthew Tindal's Christianity as Old as the Creation (1730).
