[s.l., Dublin?]: [s.n.], Printed in the year 1793 118pp, [6]. Contemporary sheep. Rubbed, joints split, slight loss to head and foot of spine. Without FFEP, title page browned, else internally clean and crisp. The second edition in English of Pasquale de Mattei's (1705-1779) first published work, a devotional manual encouraging good Christian conduct based upon the life and teachings of Italian Jesuit Saint Luigi Gonzaga (1568-1591). Born into an aristocratic dynasty, then rulers of the Duchy of Mantua, Gonzaga renounced his inheritance to join the Society of Jesus. In 1591 he devoted himself to the care those Roman citizens struck down by plague. The disease would be his downfall. He was beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726. ESTC records copies of this edition at four locations in the British Isles (BL, Downside Abbey, NLS, and Oxford), and a further two in North America (College of the Holy Cross and Texas). Cambridge: Printed by J. Archdeacon, 1770. [4], 112pp. With a half-title. Contemporary speckled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. A trifle rubbed. Inked ownership inscription of C. Preston (dated 1812), later armorial bookplate of John Norcliffe Preston, and recent bookplate of Kenneth Monkman of Shandy Hall to FEP. The first edition of the first published work of poet Kenrick Prescot, of whom little is known. The Monthly Review said of the work: 'In this treatise the behaviour of Saint Paul of Athens is examined, and his zeal, his eloquence, and his knowledge are mush insisted upon. The critical parts of it are not destitute of merit, but we must observe, that Dr. Prescot does not write in the most agreeable or engaging manner, and that there is nothing, perhaps, very important in his reasonings or conclusions. St. Paul, we should think, has not been very fortunate in his panegyrist'. Prescot produced four further works in successive years between 1771 and 1774; two volumes of… Read More
