Spike Morelli was originally the name of a character in Forrest R. Brown's western "Powdersmoke Trail" (1938). Cambridge : Privately Printed at the University Press, 1960. First edition : limited to 500 copies. A life of the well-known fiction writer for boys, Talbot Baines Reed (1852-1893), who led a dual life as a prominent typefounder and the author of "A History of the Old English Letter Foundries" (1887). With material on the Caxton Exhibition; the Boy's Own Paper; the Fann Street Foundry; Typography; the Leeds Mercury; the Bibliographical Society, etc. Crown 4to (26cm). [xii],80pp. Plates, illustrations. Original dark red cloth with portrait onlay in oval gilt rules on upper cover, lettered up spine in gilt; a few faint marks and spots, but otherwise very good. With the printed book-label of Ampleforth College Library (probably by Reynolds Stone) on front paste-down, with associated internal stamps, manuscript shelf-marks, and printed deaccession label.

First edition of this collection of eleven translations of Balzac's "most spell-binding" stories, including "At the Sign of the Cat and Racket", "The Unknown Masterpiece", "The Atheist's Mass", etc. Translated variously by Clara Bell, Ellen Marriage and John Gilmer, and edited and introduced by George Saintsbury (1845-1933). Loosely inserted is a short signed 1977 autograph note from the publisher, Peter Scupham. A sequence of fourteen poems "cataloguing the thoughts and affairs of the marvellous dog of the title". A pleasant antique print - a scene near Holwick in Upper Teesdale - cattle on the path by the river - the celebrated Winch Bridge (said to be the earliest suspension bridge built in Europe) in the middle distance. Engraved by William Alexander le Petit (1804?-1896) from an original study by the gifted Thomas Allom. Originally produced for the part-work "Northern Tourist" series (London : 1832-1835). Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 105 x 154mm (approx. 4-1/8" x 6-1/8"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

Engraved by Thomas Lord Busby (1782?-1838) from his own original study and originally produced for B.
