Bologna, [c.1840].. FIRST EDITION. Oblong folio (25 x 36 cm). Contemporary brown cloth, with shiny pink-coated endpapers, rebacked in complementary brown morocco with gilt rules and lettering. Title-page and 50 full-page engraved plates after Cini, Palagi, Berti, Corsini, Antolini, Ferri, Palaggi, Liverani and others. The scenes depicted, both real and imaginary, are for various historical dramas, and include architectural views and interiors of Egyptian temples, Roman baths, cathedrals, temples, prisons, and rural settings. A number of the plates have dedications below the scene and two are dated 1833 and 1836. Occasional light foxing, generally a very good copy. Ruggi was a pupil of Francesco Rosaspina in Bologna.

[Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1618].. Original copper-engraved miniature map (9.5 cm x 13.5 cm, 12 x 17 cm overall) of Canaan. Latin text to verso. Petrus Bertius (14 November 1565 � 13 October 1629) was a Flemish philosopher, theologian, historian, geographer and cartographer. Bertius published much in mathematics, and historical and theological works, but he is now best known as a cartographer.

[Strasbourg, 1522].. Original double-page Ptolemaic woodcut map of Pakistan and Western India (39 x 47.5 cm) on a trapezoidal projection, from Lorenz Fries' edition of Ptolemy's Geographi. Latin text to verso, along with two woodcut initials, and decorative woodcut borders, fortified along centre-fold with a strip of manuscript (13th century?) on parchment written in Latin in a neat textura rotunda script. Lightly toned and with some minor marginal dampstaining not affecting map, overall an attractive and early map. The map is derived from an earlier version of 1513 by Martin Waldseemuller.

Original hand-coloured engraved map (56 x 66 cm) of the Turkish, Arab, and Persian empires (now the region extending from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean), embellished with decorative cartouche titled in French, title in Latin to upper margin. An excellent copy. Original antique copper engraved map by Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726), Geographer of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Paris and published by Covens & Mortier, one of the largest and most successful publishing firms of the eighteenth century.

Augsburg: [c.1720]. Original hand coloured engraving 49.5 x 56.5 (sheet size 53 x 60 cm.). Very nice condition and colour. Elaborate diagrammatic map showing the art of battle.
