Description:
NY: Scribner's, 1924. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. An important association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "To a gallant and Forceful Defender of wildlife, Mrs. Charles C. Marshall, a reproach to the Lazy, an Inspiration to the Pure in Heart, and an Example to All, With respectful salaams of the author, W.T. Hornaday, November 17, 1924." Hornaday is well-recognized as a pivotal early champion of wildlife conservation as the first director of the Bronx Zoo and president of the American Bison Society, dedicated to protecting bison in the West. Mrs. Charles Cyrus Marshall (we can't easily find her first name) was an important ally of his and a leader among women in wildlife conservation, serving as the chairman of the conservation committee of the New York City Federation of Women's Clubs. Among other activities, she petitioned for a New York state bird and lead a campaign to educate women against the use of exotic plumes in fashion, toward the protection… Read More

NY: Viking Adult, 1993. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. Fifth printing. Signed in a blue pen on the title page by Plotkin. Recounts nine research trips into the Amazon. Says the jacket: "Mark Plotkin combines the Darwinian spirit of the great writer-explorers of the nineteenth century--curious, discursive, and rigorously scientific--with a very modern concern for the erosion of our environmental and the vanishing culture of native peoples. Plotkin is a well respected ethnobotanist who has held leadership positions at the World Wildlife Fund, the Botanical Museum of Harvard, and Conservation International. Blurbs by Thomas Lovejoy among others. A fine book in a near fine jacket with a little creasing to lower front corner and top of spine.

Description:
Stuart Wright, 1984. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Lily Hamlin. Association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper to Peter Matthiessen: "For Peter, All friendly greetings, Eleanor, Xmas, 1984." A standout association between fellow National Book Award winners: Eleanor Clark, whose husband was Robert Penn Warren, won in 1965 for the nonfiction book The Oysters of Locmariaquer. Matthiessen's At Play in the Fields of the Lord was a finalist for an NBA the following year, but he did not win until the Snow Leopard in 1979, and then Shadow Country in 2008. Matthiessen and Clark both wrote evocatively about the sea and its catch, and Clark wrote an advanced blurb for Far Tortuga that appears on its jacket: "Peter Matthiessen's most beautiful book. It goes very deep, with endless subtleties there s a feeling all the time of its being written by the sea. A wonderful creation." Moreover they were friends, running in the same Long Island-Connecticut circles. In Reading My Father, Alexandra Styron… Read More

Harper & Row, 1982. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Association copy, inscribed on the title page: "For my dear new friend and colleague, Max Steele, with all best wishes, Annie Dillard." He received the Harper Prize, the Saxton Memorial Trust Award, the Mayflower Cup Award, and O. Henry Prize among others. This title is uncommon signed, and this copy is further notable for being signed with her genuine signature rather than her perfunctory bookstore squiggle. Her first essay collection, with such often-anthologized classics as "Living Like Weasels" and "Total Eclipse." First printing, about fine with perhaps just a touch of toning/dust to upper text block face; still fine. Description:
Tendril, 1980. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. Association copy: Not signed, but from the library of Annie Dillard with her bookplate. Additionally Dillard has written the names of about a dozen well-known poets not included in the collection, including Anne Sexton, "John Ashberry" [sic], Adrienne Rich, etc., in blue ink at the top of the acknowledgements page near the front of the book. Some of her favorites, maybe, or poets she feels were unjustly omitted? The premise of this book is that 100 poets chose a favorite poem from their own work--a neat idea for an anthology. Dillard is not among the contributors. A very good book with rubbing to spine and some light scratches and rubbing to wraps. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

Peregrine Smith, 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Association copy, inscribed as a gift on the front free endpaper by David Brower, the first and longtime executive director of the Sierra Club: "For Karen Gosling, with every best wish, presumptively, David R. Brower (who likes the grand canyon, too), January 31, 1986." Gosling was the original office manager for the Earth Island Institute, the environmental project incubator which Brower founded in 1982 and which is still going strong. Gosling joined in 1986 (which perhaps explains that "presumptively," if Brower was recruiting her), and went on to be its longtime membership director. An unlikely signature in this volume, on the one hand, and yet Brower was instrumental in protecting the Grand Canyon from dams (after losing Glen Canyon), and famously was profiled by John McPhee in *Encounters with the Archdruid* rafting through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado with Bureau of Reclamation Director Floyd Dominy (the arch dam-builder). Texas Tech University Press, 2002. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Association copy, inscribed on the title page: "To Barry Lopez, who knows the true meaning of natural history, in appreciation of your effort on behalf of Texas Tech. David J. Schmidly, 23 April 2002." A tome of a book at 460 pages plus appendices about environmental transformation in Texas in the 20th century. A nice association, because Barry Lopez truly was a catalyst at Texas Tech (see Kristina Butler's article for the university, "BARRY LOPEZ: LEAVING A LEGACY," May 4, 2009). Along with E.O. Wilson, he developed the university's Bachelor of Arts in Natural History and the Humanities, and in 2001 he gave his papers to the university, laying the foundation of the James E. Sowell Family Collection in Literature, Community and the Natural World. He encouraged other contemporary writers to do the same, and Sowell Collection is now standout in the field of environmental literature. He was a regular and frequent visitor to Texas Tech… Read More

Clark City Pr, 1989. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. First thus soft cover. Illustrated by Russell Chatham. Inscribed to naturalist-author Gary Paul Nabhan and his second wife: "To Gary and Caroline, con amore, Yrs, Jim Harrison." Harrison has drawn his patented one-eyed self-portrait sketch below his signature. Nabhan and Harrison both lived in Patagonia, Arizona (Harrison part-time) and were friends for more than twenty years. Nabhan wrote a touching remembrance of Harrison after his death, detailing their lunch a week before and some of their more surprising connections (Nabhan s cousin had been Harrison s college roommate and introduce Harrison to his wife). Nabhan writes there, "Harrison was more than just another pretty face, skilled angler, hedonistic hunter, and bizarre story-teller: he had a deeply moral view of the right ways to treat the creatures of the seas, the streams the farmsteads and desert grasslands of this planet, and he minced no words when describing the ugly consequences of… Read More

Description:
Henry Holt and Co, 2005. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Inscribed on the half-title page: "Hey Bott--Mountain thinks you'll find this a good read. Mark Bowen." A whimsical/zen-sounding inscription, but "Mountain" may refer to Keith Mountain, another key character in the book. Also signed by Lonnie Thompson, the book's main scientist-climber-character, and members of his research team, presumably: Ellen Mosely Thompson, Mary Davis, Richard Kerr, Victor Zagorodnov, and Henry Brecher, all of whom are listed in the index. A tale of risk and adventure at high altitudes in pursuit of climate change data. Bowen is himself a scientist, with a PhD in physics from MIT. Blurbs by Bill McKibben, James Hansen, and Carl Safina. A very good book with one 1/8-inch-deep nick at the top of the spine, soiling/toning to the base of the boards, and a little dust soiling to corners of text block. In a very good or better dust jacket. We invite you to explore our dedicated, growing collection of signed and… Read More

Scott of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is thanked in the acknowledgments for "greatly facilitating" her research. Scott was an important Wisconsin environmentalist and is a member of the state's Conservation Hall of Fame (Wisconsin seems to have a particularly illustrious one); he and Leopold were colleagues and examples of their correspondence can be found online.
