Description:
1913. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1913. Original grey-green paper-covered boards with cover pictorial onlay. First Edition of the author's nineteenth book, her second title (after THE TALE OF MR. TOD) to appear in the "New Series" that was unfortunately issued in a binding almost as fragile as the earlier titles. THE TALE OF PIGLING BLAND was most probably in Beatrix Potter's mind as early as 1910... This story about Pigling Bland has an element of truth in it, for on November 17th 1909, in one of Beatrix Potter's letters... she wrote "The two biggest little pigs have been sold, which takes away from the completeness of the family group. But they have fetched a good price, and their appetites were fearful -- five meals a day and not satisfied." Both the first and the second printing bear the date 1913 on the title page, and "are believed to be identical" [quotes from Linder]; the third is dated 1914. This copy is grey-green in color; others are in maroon (no priority). This is a near-fine copy,… Read More

Description:
1909. London and New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1909. Original light brown boards with cover pictorial onlay. First Edition, first state, of the author's fourteenth book, which like her first includes Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor. Copies were available to the public in green or light brown paper-covered boards at 1/-, or in decorated cloth at 1/6. This copy is in light brown paper-covered boards, and is in the primary (and usual) state, with the p. 14 illustration that includes the "...Gardens neatly razed..." notice-board. (There were three printings, all dated 1909, indistinguishable from each other except that this notice-board was removed after the first or second printing.) This is a clean, near-fine copy (a trace of wear at the spine ends) of this fragile volume. Linder p. 428; Quinby 16.

Description:
1912. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1912. Original light grey paper-covered boards with front cover color plate. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's eighteenth book, and the first title to appear in the "New Series" that was unfortunately issued in a binding almost as fragile as the earlier titles. Unlike Beatrix Potter's earlier books, the principal characters are villains! and in the opening paragraph we get a hint of this fact. When sending Warne some of the book drawings, Beatrix Potter referred to the one about the fight between [the fox] Mr. Tod and [the badger] Tommy Brock [on page 86] -- which she found difficult to draw: "You will see a very confused one of the combat. I could hardly shirk one picture of it; but it was difficult to work out in detail so I made it dark." [Linder] This copy is in light grey boards (buff was another option -- no precedence). It is in near-fine condition (spine slightly browned as always, a couple of small edge-chips in the front-cover plate). Linder pp… Read More

Description:
1956. New York: Frederick Warne & Co. Inc, (1956). Original beige cloth lettered in blue, with dust jacket. First trade edition, first printing, following a 100-copy UK printing in 1955 for copyright purposes. Written in early 1907, this is a story about two pigeons, Mr. Vidler and his wife Amabella -- the latter of whom, trapped in a chimney while fleeing a hawk, is forced to nest there where she is befriended by a resident mouse. This is a copy from the first printing (the leaves measuring 155mm in height), and is in fine condition -- as is the dust jacket. Linder pp 337-346 & p.432; not in Quinby, which was published in 1954.

Description:
1911. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. Original dark green paper boards with arched pictorial onlay. First Edition of these adventures of Timmy Tiptoes (and his wife Goody), grey squirrels trying to get nuts collected and stored up for the oncoming winter. Timmy is wrongly accused of stealing other squirrels' nuts and is thrown through a tree-hole into his and Goody's nut storehouse -- where he gets sidetracked and eats so many of the nuts that he becomes too fat to get out. The presence of chipmunks and a bear in this tale have led to speculation that the author had American children in mind when she wrote and illustrated this book. Customers could buy TIMMY TIPTOES in either light brown or dark green paper boards, priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth, at 1/6. This copy is in dark green boards, and is near-fine (scarcely any external wear, minor cracking at one end of the front endpaper -- which bears an "Xmas /11" inscription). This is remarkable condition for fragile paper-covered boards… Read More

Description:
1898. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1898. 14 pp undated ads. Original dark green cloth. First English Edition of Conrad's fourth book -- his first collection of short stories (including "An Outpost of Progress," a Congo tale anticipating his later "Heart of Darkness"). The American edition by Scribner's is believed to have come out about ten days earlier. For this U.K. edition Cagle estimates a total printing of about 1250 copies (though Wise guessed 3000) -- including some later copies with no gilt top edge and laid endpapers, plus some copies that were remaindered with a cancel title page and a still later binding (the book did not sell well). This copy is in the primary state (with top edge gilt and wove endpapers), and is in near-fine condition (a few short nicks in the spine ends). TALES OF UNREST is becoming increasingly uncommon in this condition. Supino A4.7.0; Cagle A4c.1.

Description:
1898. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1898. Original tan cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Conrad's fourth book and his first collection of short stories (including "An Outpost of Progress," a Congo tale along the same vein as his later "Heart of Darkness"). This was issued about ten days before the London edition, and consisted of 1,250 copies. TALES OF UNREST was not a big seller in America: Scribner did not print a second and third impression (250 copies each) until 1906 and 1912; after the success of CHANCE in 1914, they printed 250 + 260 more copies in 1915, before selling the rights, the plates, and the unbound sheets to Doubleday Page the following year. We consider this one of the scarcer Conrad American editions; when it does turn up the volume's spine is usually severely darkened. This is a near-fine copy (spine design slightly dull, but not as bad as usual); the volume is otherwise essentially without wear. Supino A4.1.0; Cagle A4b. 1925. With a Preface by R.B. Cunninghame Graham. Toronto: S.B. Gundy | Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1925. Original navy blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jacket. First American Edition, Canadian issue. This volume appears to be the same as the US domestic issue, except that Gundy's name is added to the title page, and to the foot of the spine of both the volume and the dust jacket. It is curious that for this title, there is a Canadian issue of both the first UK edition and the first US edition. This is a fine copy in a near-fine jacket; as with all domestic American copies we have seen, the jacket is price-clipped. Supino A25.6.0 (this copy). 1925. With a Preface by R.B. Cunninghame Graham. London: T. Fisher Unwin, (1925). Original dark green cloth, with dust jacket. First (English) Edition, published on 23 January 1925, the same day as the American. This posthumous collection of four tales, published the year after Conrad died, includes "The Tale," considered to be one of his best short stories. The others are "The Warrior's Soul," "Prince Roman" and (one of his earliest, written around 1884) "The Black Mate." The volume is in just-about-fine condition; the dust jacket is near-fine, with very slight wear at its spine head and with less soil than usual. The volume and dust jacket are fine except for the usual slight discoloration of the light blue jacket; the jacket is price-clipped, but every copy we have seen has been identically clipped, so we suspect it was done by the publisher. Description:
1832. Collected and Arranged by Jedediah Cleishbotham... Edinburgh: Printed for Robert Cadell / London: Whittaker and Co., 1832. Original drab paper-covered boards with purple spine cloth, with printed spine labels. First Edition of the last of the Waverley Novels -- actually consisting of "Count Robert of Paris (2½ volumes) and "Castle Dangerous" (1½ volumes), told as if narrated by a "landlord," Jedediah Cleishbotham. Scott wrote these two tales simultaneously in 1830-1831, in declining health that included two strokes. "Count Robert" is set in Byzantium at the time of the arrival of the First Crusaders (1096). "Despite his rapidly deteriorating health, Scott sought a challenge. He believed that there was great potential in describing the declining Byzantine Empire as it confronted both Western Christendom and the advancing Ottoman Empire." "Castle Dangerous," is set in 1306 during the time of Robert the Bruce and the Scottish Wars of Independence. As he worked on the [latter] novel, Scott… Read More

1900. [a handsome copy] London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1900. 2 pp undated ads. Original light brown cloth decorated in dark brown. First Edition of this collection of five fantastic tales: "The Crystal Egg," "The Star," "A Story of the Stone Age," "A Story of the Days to Come" and "The Man Who Could Work Miracles." "The Crystal Egg," for example, involves Martians -- like THE WAR OF THE WORLDS; an antiquarian shopkeeper discovers that by peering into a certain crystal egg at an angle of precisely 137 degrees, he can see, and ultimately communicate with, Martians who apparently sent the egg as a sort of Eye on Earth. Said communication ends when the shopkeeper is discovered dead in his shop, clutching the egg in his hand. This British edition, though dated 1900, was actually published in late 1899 (the British Library copy was received on November 21st); although the American edition is dated 1899, it is considered to have been issued later than this one. This is a just-about-fine,… Read More
