Description:
[Waynesville, Missouri], [1944]. Stapled booklet measuring 8.5 x 5.5", [12] pp including printed covers. A scarce program for a World War II era anniversary ceremony held at an African American USO club at the segregated Fort Leonard Wood in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. While the central two pages print a program of events to celebrate the second anniversary of Fort Road USO Club, the rest of the program functions as a sort of guide to African American USO clubs in Missouri and elsewhere. Thus, the program prints brief histories of five different African American USO clubs (noting the contributions of the author, "your humble servant" William B. Walker), including Fort Road and two others in the Fort Leonard Wood area, as well as a club in Kansas and a club in Michigan. In addition, the program contains a directory of USO staff for the Fort Leonard Wood Area, and a list of African American USO Hostess Groups in the surrounding area who volunteered to host and entertain Black troops. A rare… Read More

Description:
New York: Baker & Godwin, Publishers, 1880. First Edition. 10.75 x 7.5”, original purple cloth with gilt lettering and illustration, 200 pp, illustration plates and illustrations within text. A book about the various imaginary weapons dreamed up by James Henry McLean, a self-proclaimed “projector, inventor and patentee,” whose main business was the sale of patent medicines. These weapons included a “floating impregnable fortress”, an “annihilating magazine cannon,” an iron war ship, a pistol with 48 shots, and more. The weapons were supposed to be so powerful that they would result in a new era of peace. Includes mentions of the efficacy of some of these weapons were they to have been used in the Indian Wars. Riling 1070: "A fantasy of arms. Literally a book in the style of a patent medicine brochure, but applied to the consideration of arms rather than ailments.” A nice copy with mild wear to covers, edges and spine tips, slight fading to spine.

No Place of Publication, Circa 1900. Notebook binding of brown paper wrappers with black cloth spine, 8.75 x 7.25", titled to front cover "Wm. H. Stockwell's Account of a Trip to California, Around the Horn in 1850," containing 81 pages of ink manuscript. A later copy (circa 1890s to 1900s, based on the appearance of the binding), of an unpublished account of a voyage to California undertaken in 1849 and 1850 by William H. Stockwell of Shaftesbury, Vermont. The account takes the form of two extremely long letters Stockwell sent to his parents while stopped in Valparaiso, Chile on February 16, 1850. Stockwell traveled aboard the Reindeer, under Captain Lord, which left Boston on November 23rd, 1849, and arrived in San Francisco on April 2nd, 1850, a voyage of 130 days. The first letter, 58 pages, provides a detailed and vivid account of the Reindeer's harrowing voyage from Boston to Valparaiso. Stockwell begins with lengthy descriptions of stormy weather off the coast of Massachusetts, the initial… Read More
