Meyer was an anthropologist, ethnologist, and natural scientist, for many years Director of the Royal Zoological and Anthropologic-Ethnographic Museum in Dresden, and in that capacity, published tremendously popular early albums of New Guinea, Celebes, and the Philippines as this one which gathers all that was known till then about the Negritos and Aetas. Condition: small loss, spine heavily worn, ex-libris on inner cover, library stamp and markings on title page, some pages loose, foxed plates, otherwise clean pages.

Alexander Schadenberg (1852-1896) was a German collector, ethnographer, and natural history enthusiast. He was born in Breslau, Germany (now Poland), on May 27, 1852, the son of a court dignitary. In 1876, Schadenberg accepted a position as a chemist at Botica Boie, a German wholesale drug firm of Pablo Sartorius in Manila. He remained with this firm for three years, at the same time indicating his interest in the exploration of the Islands. He carried out a number of excursions into the interior, visiting among others the Negritos of Bataan, Zambales, and Pampanga. aquatint, RARE beautiful view from 'Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de La Corvette de Sa Majesté La Favorite exécuté pendant les années 1830, 1831, 1832, pl. 46, sketched by Francois-Edmond Paris, engraved by Sigismond Himely and under the direction of Louis Auguste de Sainson with Arthus Bertrand, editeur. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic, scientific and artistic means, intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests.
