Description:
A 1900 copy of Isabella Bird's "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan". The Book centres around the expedition undertaken by Bird alongside a Japanese interpreter named Ito from June to September 1878. During this time, they explored locations seldom or never witnessed by Westerners. The book meticulously captures Bird's observations on Japanese residences, attire, customs, and the natural surroundings during the initial phase of the Meiji Restoration. Additionally, it dedicates a substantial portion to recounting her encounters with the Ainu people and vividly portrays the perceived widespread impoverishment among the Japanese populace residing beyond the major urban centers. Near Fine Condition. Half Bound in brown leather with brown embossed cloth covered boards. Pull out map of japan facing page 49 has light tape repairs. Binding and hinges are firm. Pages and illustrations are clean. Professionally rebacked. Boards have minor wear and light tanning to edges.
