London: Allen Lane, 1984. Second printing of this fascinating photo-book. In hardback in brown boards, under original unclipped dust jacket. Foreword by Elie Wiesel, himself a Jewish prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. This book is illustrated with a comprehensive selection (180) of Vishniac's celebrated photographs of the Jews of Eastern Europe in the lead up to World War Two. Many of the photos are are full-page. The images were taken secretly, under difficult circumstances, between 1934 and 1939, and the negatives smuggled out sewn in to clothing etc. It is not an over statement to say that these photographs remain important to preserve for posterity unforgettable images of pre-war Jewish life. Description:
N/A, 1875. A collection of 90 full page lithographs from Vanity Fair, illustrations by SPY (Sir Leslie Ward) and APE (Carlo Pellegrini) as well as a large number that are anonymous. Lithographed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son. Facing most of the lithographs, is the biography, mostly written by Gibson as Jehu Junior, written in a neat manuscript hand. (There is a tipped in plate bearing the owner / compiler's name and signature to the inside front board, but we have been unable to identify them). Four of the biographies have the subject's autograph tipped in to the page. These are Sir Francis Grant (Scottish portrait painter and President of the Royal Academy). He was a keen hunter, and this also has a large sketch of a huntsman by Grant tipped in. Richard Boyle (9th Earl of Cork and Orrery). Frederic Leighton (Painter, draughtsman and sculptor. He also had the distinction of the shortest peerage in history. He died the day after being made a Lord). Reverend Arthur Stanley (Dean of Westminster).… Read More

Description:
London:: Weidenfeld, 1972. First Edition. First UK edition. A lovely association copy (of sorts). From the library of Lord Harold Davies of Leek, with a tipped in TLS from Sir Harold Wilson to Lord Leek. The letter is a single sheet, on House of Commons note paper, and refers to his studying Cabinet memoranda during the summer recess of 1978. The book itself, in original blue and red dust wrapper. Red cloth with gilt titles. In addition to the letter from Wilson, there is the ownership signature of Rt Hon Lord Davis of Leek PC to the ffep. There are also some interesting marginalia, some are just penciled ticks or references, others more significant. For example he contradicts an American statement by Johnson with the comment "This was known when I went to Hanoi" Lord Leek was a Labour MP, and Wilson's PPS, who undertook a peace mission to Vietnam at Wilson's behest. His "secret" mission was revealed before he arrived, to the fury of the Americans, and led to him being ignored by Ho Chi Minh. His… Read More

Paris, : Parsons, Galignani et Compagnie, 1808. Second edition. Bound in quarter red morocco, marbled blue card boards and ornate gilt-stamped titles to spine. Complete with engraved frontis portrait. This is a French translation, by J. Martinet, of the memoirs of the notorious public life, and colourful private life, of the late Right Honourable Charles-James Fox. Spine shows very little sign of wear, and boards are just a little scuffed. Internally, the pages are toned, particularly to the front. Evidence of a small bookplate having been removed from front pastedown. Charles-James Fox (1749-1806), was a prominent British statesman whose opinions in favour of the American War of Independence became some of the most radical ever to be aired in the Parliament of his era. Fox's parliamentary career spanned 38 years of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and he was the arch-rival of William Pitt the Younger. xiv, 324 pp. Seconde édition. London: John W. Parker, 1849. A very nice rebound copy of this work. First edition. Bound in half brown leather with marbled boards. Clean and tidy with very slight rubbing only. The text block is clean, if fractionally darkened. Errata slip present. A classic work in the theory of colonization. Wakefield proposes among other things the creation of a colony in New Zealand to be administered by the Church of England, thus disarming missionary opposition. In fact, the first emigrant ships left for the Canterbury settlement in 1850, and Wakefield himself left for New Zealand in 1853, eventually settling in Wellington. 230 by 150mm (9 by 6 inches). xxiv, 1-514, 6 (ads). pp.

Description:
London , 1816. Scarce satirical hand coloured etching. A close-up view of the Prince Regent standing with his back to the viewer. According to The British Museum, this is based on No. 9846 by Gillray, with The Regent's Bomb / Cadiz Memorial in the background. The image is mainly focussed on the George IV's large, rounded posterior! His curled and powdered wig, calves and arms are all also exaggerated. His garter is inscribed 'Honi soit' - this is an abbreviation of the Anglo-Norman phrase Honi soit qui mal y pense, or shame on he who thinks evil of it. This is the motto of the Order of the Garter. The engraving is clean and bright, with just residue of sticky tape to four corners of otherwise blank verso. Nice, Georgian humorous piece. 255 x 180 mm (10 x 7 inches).

Description:
London: Ric. Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church Yard, 1688. First Edition. pamphlet, disbound. Title, text, adverts (for Chiswell). "A Clear Proof" although written as through from a Protestant, was in fact a Catholic work, trying to disprove the certainty of Protestantism. This work is a rebuttal of that work. Apart from a little light foxing in a few places, the text is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together. John Williams (C1633–1709), was a Church of England minister, and later Bishop of Chichester (not to be confused with the Jesuit priest of the same period). He was very anti-Catholic and wrote a large number of pamphlets attacking Rome. He argued that the Popish plot was genuine, and was firmly opposed to the accession of James. His preferment as Bishop had to wait until the time of William and Mary. [ii], 1-41, [iii]. pp. Wing W2739
