Description:
New York: International Polygonics, Ltd, 1989. Softcover. Fine. There are two reasons a mystery buff will want this book: the first is that this is a republication of a mystery classic, dating from 1952, and the second is that this is a trade paperback. A trade paperback is not the small, low quality, mass market book we are so used to in the US. A trade paperback is larger and of higher quality paper, and therefore so much nicer to read and of course, collect. (One of our great pleasures is finding the British trade paperbacks of some of our favorite mystery authors - the UK editions are trade paperbacks and therefore so much more desirable and more pleasurable to read.) Millar is known for the depth of her characters, and we highly recommend Wikipedia's succinct article regarding her writing style and characterization. As mystery buffs ourselves, we are always on the lookout for a good authors in this genre that we may have ...(clutching my pearls here)... overlooked! ABEDESC First IPL edition.… Read More

Description:
South Yorkshire: Pen & Sword Books Ltd, 2009. Hardcover. New. Gift quality./New. A fascinating and bemusing look into Victorian health practices. Dr. Thomas Allinson (1858-1918) was a doctor, writer, businessman, and proponent of vegetarianism and women's rights. In this work, Anna Selby compiles his writing, providing a look into Victorian advice, health culture, and cooking. The book features nearly 200 pages of Victorian-era advice from Allinson, who professes to keep a non-flesh diet, abstain from alcoholic drinks, tobacco, and coffee, and rise between 7 and 8 am every day and take a walk before breakfast, "no matter how cold, wet or foggy." Containing everything from Allinson's thoughts on tea ("tea drinking is injurious and should never be indulged in; all are best without it") to his essay on "How to Become Beautiful and Attractive," the book offers insights into health advocacy of another era. Also included are over 110 Victorian-era recipes, such as Almond Pudding and Cucumber salad.

Marc Riboud, renowned photographer, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and World Photography Organisation Lifetime Achievement award winner, became one of the first European photographers to go to China in 1957. This book, published in 1981, provided a previously-unavailable look into life in communist China. Riboud writes in a prologue note, "For so long, and until so recently, China was a closed and secret land where the huge transformations taking place were almost always hidden from foreign eyes. Today the doors are opening." The book is a fascinating glimpse into history, showcasing art and culture, personal celebrations, and a peek into the lives of many different individuals, from the wealthy to the poor. A fascinating and captivating book.

Description:
San Diego, CA: Singular Thomson Learning, 2001. First Edition. Softcover. New. An excellent reference for speech pathologists, otolaryngologists, and other professionals that work with the voice. Also of value to the professional singer. Aside from professionals' interest, this book is just really fascinating to read - it covers breathing, neuromuscular, articulation, pharmacological effects, endocrine effects, and many other considerations of the voice as one ages. It's not often you can pick up a book, and literally everything you read in that book is new information, but we had that experience with this book. So many books, so little time. New, pristine.
