Red soft back with titles and engraving to the front cover - adverts to the rear. These are dated May 15th 1856. This edition has no maps or illustrations. The soft red covers are a little darkened / marked, but without significant wear. Internally clean and tidy. iv, 188, 16 pp. Adverts to rear.

Engraved frontis portrait of William Beattie MD, and engraved title page with view of Val Pelice. Lovely folded map of Piedmont. All plates are protected by their original tissue guards. Very good condition boards, slight rubbing only. New end papers. Moderate foxing to frontis. Light foxing to engraved title. The rest of the book is in a very good with only light foxing in some places. iii, 216 pp. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches). Gilt stamped titles to spine. Profusely illustrated, as the title page says. Frontispiece map, and many b/w photos - some double-page. Also some in text illustrations. Boards only lightly rubbed, and contents are very clean. Top edge gilt still quite fresh. xiii, 378. 36 full page plates. 245 x 180 mm (9¾ x 7 inches).

Aldershot: Gale and Polden Ltd, 1954. First edition in dust wrapper. The wrapper has significant chipping and closed tears, but is still holding together, and is reasonably clean. Held within an archival wrapper. Red cloth boards are clean and tidy, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. A touch of foxing to the closed page edges. 15 black and white photographs, 5 maps. Complete. 119 pages. 190 by 125mm (7½ by 5 inches). . Première édition avec jaquette. London: F. Warne & Co., [1870]. First Edition. Illustrated publisher's soft covers. Undated but late 19th century (1870). Six charming colour plates depicting children enjoying Christmas and other holidays. The idea was for a child to cut out and glue the figures from separate sheets (not included) on to the scenes to complete the pictures. Or, it is suggested, the blanks could be hand coloured. There is a note to say: Gum Arabic dissolved in boiling water is the best material to make the cut-out figures adhesive. 12 pages. 265 x 230 mm (10½ x 9 inches). Covers are a little soiled, and have moderate edge wear. Four pages are complete, and two partially complete. Signs of sheen from dried glue on some pages, and on back cover.

A watercolour entitled Water and marshbirds. Beautifully executed, would appear to be the original for a book illustration? 16 water and marsh birds are illustrated, including a swan and a flamingo. illustration is on art board and is sized 48cm x 31cm. It is presented under passe partout of 60cm x 40cm. To the bottom edge is a little marking. One of the birds (Grey Heron) has been neatly pasted onto the rest of the image. To the reverse of the passe partout is a photocopy of the artwork with the birds labelled in German. Dittrich, Walter: (1881 Haida - 1976 Rorgenwies/Eigeltingen) German watercolourist and book illustrator.

Geneva / Geneve: N/A , 1820. Undated, but likely from 1818-1822, this fine watercolour of Mary in the style of Raphaël, although unsigned has a contemporary paper attribution / provenance lightly tipped to it. This states that it was painted by Schenker and came from a collection. It was given by Ferdinand Dupon (?) as a souvenir of his two little brothers. Edged in gilt, the painting is in very good condition, with just a couple of tiny marks to it. 110 by 80mm (4¼ by 3¼ inches). Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. Bookplate of Syon Abbey, Chudleigh to the inside front board. Overall in sound condition. The buckram is clean, but the colour has entirely faded to the spine. Internally clean and tidy, with a little darkening to the end papers only. 72 pages.

London: Langley Curtis [LC], 1679. Clean and tidy with very slight darkening to the page edge only. . A single issue of a weekly anti-Catholic diatribe in the form of a contemporary broadside issued at the time of the Popish Plot (1678-1681). The Weekly Pacquet is Number 16 - Both of the broadsides were issued Friday 24th October 1679. Pagination is continuous (presumably from issue 1) and these leaves are numbered page [121] - [128]. They are held together, but would appear to have been bound together with other issues at some point. 16 pages. 190 by 140mm (7½ by 5½ inches). Clean and tidy with very slight darkening to the page edge only.

This work describes the various types of traditional houses and is profusely illustrated with Frontis and other b/w illustrations throughout; including plans and sketches - many folding. Very clean and tidy throughout. Lightly soiled dust wrapper that is slightly darkened to the spine. 230 x 150 mm (9 x 6 inches). Iorwerth C. Peate was The Keeper of the Department of Folk Cultures and Industries, in The National Museum of Wales. From the library of the Welsh Nationalist John Legonna (1918-1978), author of the book Celtic Odyssey. Has his bookplate to front endpaper.

London : Kent & Co., 1862. A lovely bound copy of the first year of this scarce fashion magazine. 12 issues from July 1862 - June 1863. Each issue is comprised of 4 pages of text accompanied by a folding / double page engraved diagram. These show cutting patterns for gentleman's clothing, (and one has a skeleton with accompanied text). To the rear are 10 full page colour illustrations with attractive hand colouring, showing fashions of the day. These with the mark of the fashion plate printer Louis-Joseph Mariton. In later gilt lettered three quarter leather binding. 270 x 210 mm (10¾ x 8¼ inches). The Metropolitan Foremen Tailors' Society was formed in 1850. In 1862 they began the "West-End Gazette" to provide patterns and illustrations of the clothing available. This collection of the first year's publication has been bound up - the binder has mistakenly stated "1850" to the spine rather than 1862/3 as should be embossed there.

Amsterdam: Wed. Aart Dirksz. Oossaan, 1694. A lovely copper plate engraving of the Wester Kerk. Printed on two sheets, pasted together. A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Sheet size 43cm x 50.5cm. A lovely uncoloured example of this engraving. First Edition . Une belle gravure sur cuivre de la Wester Kerk. Imprimée sur deux feuilles collées l'une à l'autre. Tinted illustrations in text, also by Alice Havers. In original pictorial hardback boards with gilt embellishments. Cloth spine. The six stories are: The Daisy, The Brave Tin Soldier, The Conceited Apple-branch, The White Swans, The Pea-blossom, and The Little Match-seller. Translated by Mrs H. B. Paull. Text printed in a frame in brown letterpress. Boards are somewhat rubbed, with signs of wear. Internally the book has some staining to very outer leading edge; not affecting the images or text. 48 pages. 190 x 260 mm (7½ x 10¼ inches).
