[WHITMAN, Walt]. Original photograph of the white-bearded poet, 4 x 2 3/4", in later wooden frame. N.p., n.d. [New York? 1860s?]. $700.00
Probably William Kurtz, or possibly Matthew Brad or Alexander Gardner? Label on verso of Charles M. Heritage, picture framer, 424 Broadway, Camden, New Jersey, where he operated his business for many years, beginning in 1930. A manuscript note pasted on verso by noted Whitman collector, Harriet Chapman Sprague: "This picture of Whitman belonged to Herman Livesey (first curator of the Walt Whitman House in Camden). He gave it to Mrs. Martha L. Davis, his successor--she sent it to me March 31, 1950. Have seen none like it but it may be taken from Saunders 99 or from W W in Camden, p. 378. HCS." There is no image of WW at p. 378, and we do not find it anywhere else.
