letter headed 85 Overslade Lane Bilton Rugby dated June 21st reads -
My dear Celia
I am sorry to say that I am writing to you with news that is not good, to put it mildly, and there is never a way of wrapping it up.
Oleg is very ill indeed, Kate and Steve flew over to New York and returned a week ago.
The melanoma Oleg had removed last year and his lymph gland, was not the success his doctors thought.
about a month ago Oleg telephoned me and said he was losing weight and was going into hospital for tests.
Kate nurses at the Farnham hospice and was able to discuss the situation with the doctors.
the cancer is everywhere, friends are all very supportive and Oleg is very philosophical, there is talk of him going home shortly with 24 hour nursing care.
sometimes he is too weak to talk on the telephone.
Oleg has said he didn't want you to be upset or worried with this news, but I think I must give you a warning.
In about a month we are all going in various directions to France, we are all quite devastated.
I will let you have any news if there is any change. I am sorry to be the bearer of this news and hope I have done the right thing in telling you.
Sincerely Mary

also enclosed is a tiny clipping from the Times newspaper giving details of Oleg's memorial service in 1993.
