About This Item

TOLKIEN, J[ohn] R[onald] R[euel]. The Book of Lost Tales Part I. Edited by Christopher Tolkien. Boston: Houghton Mifflin [1984]. 8vo, [vi] 297pp. Black cloth with spine stamped in silver. Orange endpapers. A fine copy in original color dust jacket.

First US edition, review copy with publisher's review slip laid in. The first of the eventual twelve-volume series titled The History of Middle-earth (with volumes two and three listed opposite title as being "in preparation"). This collection of early stories by J.R.R. Tolkien detailing the complex mythology of his beloved Middle-earth, was taken from manuscripts compiled and annotated by Christopher Tolkien, and presents the earliest form of the mythology that would comprise The Silmarillion. Though published seven years after The Silmarillion, this in-depth volume details some of Tolkien's earliest writing on the mythology of his expansive world. Each tale is accompanied by notes and detailed commentary by his son. A must-have for any serious Tolkien collector or scholar.
