With the bookplate of Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Baronet, on the front board and the front pastedown endpaper and the small, gilt bookplate of Alexander McGrigor on the front free endpaper. Also with the small blind stamp of Crendon Hall on the title page and first page. In his book "On Poisons, in Relation to Medical Jurisprudence and Medicine" (Lea & Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1848), Doctor Alfred Swaine Taylor states: "The great value of chemical evidence in otherwise doubtful cases of poisoning, was never more strongly shown than at the trial of Mary Ann Burdock at Bristol, in 1835... The body of the deceased had been buried fourteen months: it was exhumed, and the poison discovered in the stomach and viscera." The boards are in good condition with minimal to no wear. The binding is tight and square.

The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release. There is also included a section for Notes and Errata. Without previous owners' names or other markings. 259 pp., [1]. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches.

Very nicely rebound in full ruled calf retaining original raised bands, top edge gilt; marbled end-papers. Signed in pencil by publishers Haak and Verbeek on Verso of title. 4 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches. [viii],370, [24] pages.
