About This Item

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Fair. Large 8vo 9" - 10. Introduction by Claude A Swanson, then Secretary of the Navy. Duotone card of Richard E. Byrd, perhaps rendered by "Wallin Tittle" (?), tipped-in at page behind fine black-and-white frontis photograph of the author. Duotone appears to be SIGNED. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover, clean but for gift inscription at first free endpaper and then again at page of dedication, with minimal rubbing to or sunning of extremities. Bumping to spine head adn foot, light bruising to tips, unbroken. Illustrated dust jacket present, price- and machine-clipped, protected in Brodart, but moderately worn and with some chipping along edges. Illustrated endpaper (maps). Many score fine illustrations, and two maps. Illustrated endpapers (maps). From the publisher's blurb, "Back from the twilight of an ice age Admiral Byrd has come with a story of sights that men have hardly dreamed of, sights that no human eye has ever witnessed before- an account of difficulties met and overcome in the 'loveliest and most unforgiving of continents.' Using the most primitive means and the most modern, pushing on by ship, dog team and by plane, Admiral Byrd and his men penetrated to the very heart of the Antarctic. There, with the latest scientific instruments, they coaxed from the age-old ice secrets that have been locked there since the world was young." Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. xxi [1], 1-405 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
