About This Item

Columbia, 1905. Everett, Marshall : Exciting Experiences in the Japanese-Russian War. Chicago : Columbia Publishing House, 1904 (date to English language cp - 1905 listed on the Swedish language cp). Salesman's sample of the full book, in English and Swedish. Size is octavo (8vo), 9.375"/24cm h. Bound in publisher's burgundy cloth, gilt lettering and naval theme ornamentation to boards (only - none to spine) - with the rear board replicating the appearance of the spine in the full edition. Plain white endpapers. Pagination variable, reflecting the sampling of chapters and llustrations, approximately 100 leaves/200 pp in total. Mixture of coated pp with mainly b&w illus (frontispiece, to verso ffep, in color, plus one painted by Kaiser Wilhelm), and uncoated. Perhaps half pp are illus (photos, drawings, political cartoons); final four sheets are coated/lined pp for salesman's sale records, one line filled in. Small section in Swedish text near end, mostly in English. Condition notes: a worn copy - spine ends rolled, corners bumped, loss of brightness to gilding. Binding solid and just off square. Ffep/frontispiece are detached. Pages generally tanned but else clean. An interesting historical tidbit, with Everett credited on the title page as 'The Greatest Descriptive Writer the World has Ever Known". We personally inspect every book we offer.
