Undated, circa 1880s. 2 volumes. Beautifully illustrated, every Bird described has a Full-Page Colour Plate, In-Text illus. under decorative Capital and another bird portrait as a Tailpiece. 80 Full Page Colour Plates. Each Volume has a concluding Chapter by E. Kearton on Bird's Eggs. Each Vol. has a colour Frontis illus. protected by tissue guards ( First series Frontis "Goldfinch", Second series "Carrion Crow" ), opposite Title page with Vignette of a hovering Kestrel. Each book has 40 Plates, 36 of Birds and 4 of Eggs, almost all Plates protected by tissue guards. Attractively bound In Period Black Calf Half-Leather bindings with 5 raised bands to spine,Bright Gilt titles on brown ground and bright gilt decoration in the compartments. Endpapers and all page edges marbled. Tiny bit of wear to leather at tips of fore corners. No inscriptions except old penciled booksellers price on back of ffep.
