The second edition.Complete in two volumes.A detailed ornithological work focusing on the birds commonly found on the British Isles.Volume I illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, polychromatic vignette title page, eight hand-coloured plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Four pages of adverts to the rear.Volume II illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, polychromatic vignette title page, eight hand-coloured plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Four pages of adverts to the rear.The vignette title pages to these volumes are the very first successful specimens of G. Baxter's desirable polychromatic printing. Written by Robert Mudie, an author and newspaper editor. His other ornithological works included 'The Natural History of Birds'. In the original cloth binding, rebacked with the original boards and spines restored. Externally, generally smart, a little rubbed. Spines are lightly faded. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light marks to the boards and spines. Hinges have been reinforced. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with some scattered spots, including to the plates. Ink mark to the head of the vignette title and following leaf of Volume I, small tide mark to the head of the vignette title. Good
