Description:
London: John Murray, 1850. New edition. Small square octavo, pp xvi, 144, (4). + publisher's catalogue 8 pages, with 12 lithographed plates, delicately hand-coloured, all edges gilt, very clean internally, a contemporary signature on the front endpaper [Charles H. Hingeston, 1852], original blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering on upper cover, slightly faded, a little worn at the corners, very neatly re-backed with a modern cloth spine, unlettered. Still a very pleasing copy of a work which is difficult to find in good condition. [In many ways a ground-breaking work, as was much of Mantell's opus. It alerted the Victorians to an aspect of natural history which had previously largely escaped them, and was a remarkable precursor to the germ theory.]. Cloth. Very Good.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, May 2006. Hardcover. First Edition / full number line. Inscribed & signed by both authors on the title page. Fine book in a Fine jacket. Text unmarked. Jacket clean and bright. Laid-in tri-fold pamphlet from the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. xxvi + 230 pages. Crossing stick bridges over swollen rivers and battling swarms of tsetse flies, Mark and Delia Owens found their way into one of the most startlingly beautiful, wild places on earth, the northern Luangwa Valley in Zambia. As they were setting up camp to launch their lion research, gunfire echoed off the cliffs nearby. Gangs of ivory poachers were not only shooting the elephants but also virtually enslaving local villagers. Against unimaginable odds, Mark and Delia stopped the poaching by helping the villagers find other work, start small businesses, and improve their health care and education. Living with wild creatures all around (lions sleeping…

Heavy book: extra charges for expedited or international shipping. Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and…
