viii, 87 pages.

Very small loss of cloth to fore-edge of upper board and lower corners. Top lower board corner bumped. End-papers slightly browned. Neat ink inscription of a previous owner to the half-title, and book-seller's pencil notations to the front free end-paper. Numerous neat pencil notations to the margins of the section on Turkish books – possibly accession numbers?

Elias John Wilkinson Gibb (1857 - 1901) was a Scottish orientalist. With a knowledge of Arabic and Persian languages he became especially interested in Turkish language and literature. He was seen as a sympathetic and talented orientalist who, despite never visiting the regions that he studied, acquired a renowned library which, upon his death, passed to Cambridge University, the British Museum, and the British embassy at Constantinople.

A scarce copy of this handlist which is divided into five sections; Turkish books, Persian and Arabic texts, catalogues of oriental manuscripts, philology, and miscellaneous. There is also a preface by E. G. Browne, an appendix of Persian, Arabic and Urdu books from the Cowell collection, and an index of names of authors, editors and others mentioned in the list of Turkish books.

Charlottesville: Bibliographical Society of America, 1980. hardcover, dust jacket. 6 x 9.25 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 568 pages. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Bibliographical Society of America, this retrospective collection of articles seeks to represent, in the broadest possible way, the diverse contributions of the members of the Society to its Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America. The pieces demonstrate to the highest degree of excellence - articles of critical importance that have moved forward the art of bibliography. This volume contains 39 articles that strongly suggest that the practice of bibliography in America during the past three-quarters of a century cannot be easily categorized. Instead, the articles range over the entire spectrum of the world of books. An interesting characteristic of the selection is the preponderance of articles concerned with the relationship between books and people - especially with collectors rather than with those… Read More
