About This Item

New York, New York: McLoughlin Bros., Publishers, 1890. Hardcover. Fair. Vintage collection from the late-19th-early 20th century (no date in book, c. 1890 per publisher) of 68 classic fairy tales from Andersen, illustrated throughout the 284 pages with pen-and-ink drawings + a full-color frontispiece depicting "A Christmas Eve Dream" (artist unattributed). With deep red cloth over boards stamped with a colorful illustration & gilt lettering to front/black lettering & cat design to spine, this hardcover quarto to (8.25" x 01.5") is in Fair condition: text block is secure, but binding has cracked & been reglued, but ffep & frontispiece are completely loose. Pages generally clean with the occasional smudge; 2 pages have tears, one taped, & there is old tape offsetting to endpapers. One page has some pen scribbles, else completely unmarked. Heavy rubbing to extremities with cloth loss at both ends of spine & all corners. Still, a lovely copy for its vintage illustrations...and the timeless stories!
