A detailed history of the Girondins, a political group at the time of the French Revolution who were active in the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention. Initially part of the Jacobin movement, they campaigned for the end of the monarchy, but resisted the momentum of the Revolution resulting in conflict from the radical Montagnards and the eventual mass execution of the Girondins. This event is often considered to mark the beginning of the Reign of Terror in France. Written by Alphonse de Lamartine, a French author and poet, who was influential in the foundation of the French Second Republic as a statesman. Volume one is illustrated with frontispiece and nine plates. Volume two is illustrated with frontispiece and eight plates. Volume three is illustrated with frontispiece and nine plates. Volume four is illustrated with frontispiece and ten plates. Collated complete. In the original red crushed morocco binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Near Fine
