About This Item

Lisbon, Off. de Antonio Rodrigues Galhardo, 1821.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, late twentieth-century marbled boards (slight wear to extremities). Some light browning, very minor worming without loss. Good to very good condition. 61 pp., lacks a final blank leaf found in some copies. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Pages 3-12 reprint a letter of March 13, 1821 viciously attacking the captain-general of Madeira for his actions there after news arrived that the Constitution of 1821 had been accepted in Lisbon; it was signed by "Hum Cidadão Funchalense" and printed in a London paper. The rest of the volume is the Captain-General's own account of these events, signed by over a hundred military officers, government officials and businessmen. Botelho (1768-1840), a Lisbon native, maintained order in Madeira until he received word that D. João VI had accepted the Constitution, then proclaimed it in Madeira as well. Botelho's literary efforts were eulogized by Alexandre Herculano. *** Innocêncio VII, 224-5. França Vieira & Aragão de Freitas, Madeira: investigação bibliográfica 352. On Botelho, see Grande enciclopedia XXXVII, 72-3. NUC: DCU-IA.
