About This Item
Saint Louis: Woodward & Tiernan Printing Co., 1895.. 743pp., including in-text illustrations, portraits, index to the historical section, index of biographies, and an index of illustrations, plus color frontispiece and sixteen plates. Folio. Later calf in matching style, spine gilt, with original front and rear panels laid down, including original gilt-stamped front panel featuring vignette of a longhorn. Marbled edges, portion of original gilt backstrip preserved and laid in. Binder's stamp to rear pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription in pencil to preliminary blank. The color frontispiece, not issued with all copies, is present here. Small closed tear to bottom of pp.299-302, not affecting text. Minimal foxing and soiling, plates with some light foxing. Small tape repair to edge of p.742. Very good. One of the so-called "big four" cattle books, and in our experience, the most difficult to obtain. The size and nature of the binding on this book often results in its being found in poor condition. This copy has been very sympathetically rebound in the original style, with the original front and rear panels laid on. "Supposedly most of the first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire, hence its rarity today" - Merrill. "The book contains a wealth of information, and is a cornerstone in any range library" - Reese. MERRILL ARISTOCRATS, p.17. REESE, SIX SCORE 24. ADAMS HERD 593. DOBIE, p.100. GRAFF 891. BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 34. HOWES C820, "b." VANDALE 44. RADER 1891. REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 219.
