Random House. Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket. 1940. First Edition; Second Printing. Hardcover. ; Tan/brown cover has modest wear to corners and spine caps but clean, bright, and in very good+ condition. End sheets and paste downs are lightly toned. Pages show only very modest signs of handling with a couple very small faint soil spot but overall quite clean and in very good condition. Copyright page carries 4 lines of text (First Printings are stated with 5 lines of text) Matte finish dust jacket is lightly toned and has light fraying at the corners and top and bottom edge of spine panel and a larger tear on back panel with an old tape repair on the underside of the DJ but overall clean, bright, and in very good- condition. Upper corners of front flap of DJ is clipped with publisher's price of 200/200 and back flap. DJ lacks the bird, but has the following points that only appear in the first and very earliest states: 10 testimonials on the back panel; 4 lines on copyright page identical to the first printing (1st printing has 5 lines with "First printing" creating the 5th line; later states have only 3 lines on copyright page) ; 5 paragraphs of text on the front flap followed by the code 60-90; The King's Stilts blurb on back flap. This is a second or third state. DJ protected by a brand new, clear, acid-free mylar cover. We add mylar covers to all books with DJs to preserve the DJs and add luster to magnify their beauty. (If pictured, shown without the mylar cover for an accurate representation of dust jacket. ) .

Synopsis

Horton Hatches the Egg is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1940. The book, along with Horton Hears a Who later provided the thrust of the plot for the Broadway musical Seussical. The character Horton appeared again in Horton Hears a Who!, published in 1954. Plot summary The book concerns an elephant named Horton, who is convinced by an irresponsible bird named Mayzie to sit on her egg while she takes a short "break", which proves to last for months.
