About This Item

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Co., 1928. 8vo. 223, [1] pp. Photo frontisp., numerous photo plates. Green publisher’s cloth, blue illustration & lettering front cover, illustrated endpapers (minor shelfwear, slight rubbing, very slight bumping to corners), w/ d.j. cover art of Curtis w/ teepees & US Capitol dome (minor chipping, tears, tear to foot of spine & lower back cover affecting some lettering, closed tears), still VG/G- copy. First edition of this surprisingly uncommon biography of the first Native American to become Vice President of the United States under Hoover, after becoming the first Republican Whip in 1915 in the US Senate. Curtis (1860-1936) lived from 1863-1868 with his maternal grandmother on the Kaw Indian Reservation near Council Grove, KS on the Santa Fe Trail, and after a raid by the Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Arapaho in 1868, and subsequent removal of the tribe to Indian Territory, he went to live with his paternal grandmother in Topeka, KS and was integrated into an Anglo-American household. As a legislator, Curtis advocated for US citizenship for American Indians, and supported women’s suffrage, but notoriously authored the 1898 Curtis Act which severely weakened tribal governments, and allowed the division of communal tribal lands, devastating Native Americans across the U.S.
