About This Item

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1987. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Tall octavo. 301pp. Illustrated from photographs. Fine in spine faded else near fine dust jacket with a bit of fugitive blurring to the pink letters as usual. Laid in is a postcard from Van Vechtan to artist Prentiss Taylor. Taylor was an artist who created Van Vechten's bookplate, and the jacket art for Van Vechten's book *Sacred and Profane Memories*, both illustrated by Taylor. Taylor enjoyed especially close relationships with Van Vechten and Langston Hughes, with whom he created The Golden Stair Press, and which issued some of Hughes' work, including five rare broadsides and two pamphlets. Letters to Taylor are included in the text of this book.
