London: A. Linde, 1755.. First English edition, folio, two parts in one volume, xxiii, (i), 206 pp; vii, (i), 291, (13) pp. Large folding map after Johann Baptist Homann, hand coloured in outline, and 28 plates. Uncut in modern period style panelled calf, some light sunning, corners very slightly bumped. The author, already a noted writer and antiquarian in the region, was appointed to the position of Bishop of Bergen in 1747, a position he held until 1754 before returning to Copenhagen. The first edition of the first part, in Danish, was published in 1752, the second part a year later. Amongst other works, Pontoppidan subsequently commenced work on Den Danske Atlas, the great atlas and description of the region, completed and published between 1763 and 1781.
