About This Item

London: Edward Arnold, 1903. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A first edition of John Meade Faulkner's suspense novel, The Nebuly Coat. A first edition of John Meade Faulkner's final novel, The Nebuly Coat. Whilst Faulkner is best known for his novel Moonfleet, this early twentieth century suspense novel was adapted for radio play in 1965. Having been sent to a remote northern town to supervise the restoration of a church, the young architect Edward Westray grows increasingly suspicious of Lord Blandamer. Prior owner's bookplate to the front paste down. The book belonged to Scottish lawyer and amateur criminologist William Roughead. Roughhead was an early practitioner of the modern 'true crime' genre, and became an unofficial historian of crime attending almost every murder trial of importance at the High Court. This habit provided him with material for his articles in the Scottish legal journal, the Juridical Review. With a prior booksellers description tipped in to the recto of the front endpaper. Prior owner's signature to front endpaper, 'E. Simpson, 1903'. In the publisher's original cloth binding with a coat of arms in the nebuly style to the front board. Externally, generally smart. The cloth is a little grubby. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the joints, less so to the spine. A little bumped to the tail of the spine, with a small closed tear in the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light scattered foxing to the endpapers, pages are bright and clean. Very Good
