London: Chatto and Windus,. Hardback. 302pp. First edition. A history of ideas from Romanticism to the wane of the Victorian age. With a particular focus on religion, ethics and similar considering, among other the writings of Coleridge, Thomas Arnold, John Henry Newman, Thomas Carlyle, Jeremy Bentham, J. S. Mill, Auguste Comte, George Eliot and Matthew Arnold. Still very useful background reading for students of nineteenth century history, literature, philosophy, politics or religion. Red cloth cloth with gilt titles to spine is very clean and neat but with a hint of sunning where there are gaps in the dust jacket. Dust jacket has a significant tear tot eh hear of the spine and other small nicks and chips to the edges. Tanned to dust jacket spine. Very good copy. . Paperback. 1949.
